FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Haere Mai, welcome back to Term 3!

We began the term with a special Powhiri to welcome two new teachers, Mr Jonas Mahler who will be teaching Totara class (Year 5&6)  in Tui team and Mrs Kylie Allen who will be teaching Puriri class for one day a week, job sharing with Mrs Colllins in the new entrant room.

Jonas has been teaching overseas for the last few years, is well experienced, loves maths, sports and has some wonderful travelling tales to tell.

Kylie is well known to many of us being a mum of two current students, Hamish and Mackenzie, a wonderful active fundraiser and member of FOWs and for the last few years has been a teacher at Siverdale Kindergarten.

We are so fortunate to have these two new staff members.

Welcome to our new families, Lachy Hendrie (Year 4), Danika Skelton (New Entrant), Jackson Magan (New Entrant), Cade Hawkins (New Entrant), Summer Sabine (Year 7), Millen Hamblyn (New Entrant), Colin Chu (Year 6) and Riana Bouzaid (Year 4).

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Planning and Organistion – The holidays has enabled us all to relax, recoup and the teachers to plan and ensure the term is well organised. Please ensure you have checked out the school website as all events and dates for the term have been uploaded to the website. Teams have also put together their newsletters that will all be put out this week with more information for you all.

THIS WEEK 

Host family meeting with World Class Travel – Thursday 25th July at 3:15pm

Preparation for our annual visit from the Japanese students of Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan is well in place, thank you to all our families hosting the 15 students arriving next week. This has become a real highlight for us all at Wainui School as we make new friends, always learn something more about the culture of Japan and have lots of fun. During the stay of 10 days we have our annual disco and the school cross country. So lots and lots to look forward to!!

Intinerant music, drama, maths and literacy lessons all start this week and can be enrolled in. (These do cost, please ensure this is fully understood).

Music – Ross Hutchison is back, he teaches guitar, keyboard on Monday and is picking up drumming lessons on a Friday. If you wish to have these lessons for your child contact Ross on 027 350 7544.

Music – Maria O’ Flaherty  teaches singing, keyboard and guitar on Wednesday’s please contact Maria on 021 0325 287 for more information.

Maths – Thinking Caps continues with extra tuition in Maths available in a small group has proved very successful over the years at Wainui School.  Please contact Julie and her team at Kids link who provide a wonderful support.

Thrive On – Elise Louard (Mum of Teah and Leonie) and trained teacher is bringing a new programme to Wainui School 

Thrive On Education provides specialised programmes for children displaying learning difficulties at school, or for children previously diagnosed with a learning disability such as ADHD and dyslexia. The programmes are designed to work in partnership with schools to obtain the optimal learning environment for children. The programmes can be used at home, or at school and help the parents become better advocates for their child’s learning needs.

Thrive On Education assesses each child, identifying their individual strengths, interests, learning styles, and optimal learning environment, while also determining the possible gaps in the foundations on which future learning depends. https://thriveoneducation.com/   Elise will be offering free assessments and will be at Wainui School on Wednesday 24th July 2019 to discuss the programme.

The Family Chocolate Fundraiser  Whittakers – The chocolate is all delivered in boxes and will be sent home on Friday for each family to sell.  Further information to come.

Kindo – Is set up for all payments, donations and contributions to be completed. Each team will set up the requirements if needed for your child . Please ensure you are well sorted before an activity as we will have a cut off date.  The ladies in the office will also help and guide you if you are unsure of how to use this system.

NEXT WEEK

Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan Students – Arrive from Osaka, Japan on Tuesday 30th July with their teachers (2) a Manager/ Interpreter and at times there will be English tutors for lessons at school during their stay. There will be a Powhiri to welcome the visitors to our school next Wednesday morning (30th July at 9.10am). A huge thank you to these families for hosting, Allen, Doherty, Gray, Headford, Joubert, Latham, Mallon, Marshall, Mayes, Mexted, Minton, Partner and Robinson.

Book a Learning Conversation – Our mid year Learning Conversations are for your child, you and the teacher to meet to discuss the first half of the year and set new learning goals. We have three evenings set aside to make a time.

To book your Learning Conversation/s click on https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the Event Code: jug89

Step 1: Enter your email address, parents full name, number of students you are booking for and the students name/s. Click the “Go” button.

Step 2: For each student, select your child’s classroom under the first dropdown box and select their teacher under the second dropdown box. Click the “Go” button.

Step 3: Choose the time/s you would like for your Learning Conversation/s by clicking on a time slot that suits you. Missing checkboxes mean that the time has already been booked by someone else. Click the “Go” button.

You have the option to print out a copy of the time/s you have booked, a confirmation will also be emailed to you. You can view, change or cancel your booking by using the link in the email confirmation.

The Learning Conversations are being held on Tuesday 13th, Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th July from 3.00pm – 6.00pm and are 10 minutes in length with 2 minutes in between Conversations.

If you need help making your booking/s please come to the office and ask. We will also have a computer set up there that you can use to make your booking/s.

North Harbour Gymnastics Competition –  Arno Potgieter competed in two competitions over the school holidays.  He came second in the North Harbour Competition on the 13th of July and his team took second place in the Team Competition.  Arno came Fourth in the TriStar Competition on the 21st of July and his team came first in the Team Competition.

If you are wanting to order a chick this year, the orders need to be placed by July 29th (next Monday) with the chicks being delivered to school on August 13th. Orders to: exo@wainui.school.nz

For those of you at the assembly on the last Friday of Term 2, we had an entertaining time witnessing Nikki Browne’s 3 kid goats on the stage. Two of the three  managed to “do their business” on the stage and the children all though this was hilarious!!! Thank you to Nikki and her 3 children – Ty, Bella and Harry, for sharing their thoughts about rearing kid goats and being involved with an animal for Ag Day.

I’m sure many of you will have your Ag day animals already but you have until 15th September (this is the last date for them to be born) to get your kid goat or lamb for this year.  There will be NO calves again this year.

Perform Education Visit – Wednesday 21st August (Week 5), we will be having Perform Education visit Wainui School and they will be performing for us as part of Book Week in Schools NZ 2019. The performance begins at 9.10am. The cost of this show is $5.

COMMUNITY

Primary Years Parenting Toolbox course – Orewa

Dates:                 Wednesdays:  14, 21, 18 August and 4, 11, 18 September

Time:                   7pm

Venue:                St Andrews Presbyterian Church, 107 Centreway Road, Orewa

What you will learn

In six sessions, typically run over six weeks, the Primary years Toolbox will support you to develop a strong and loving bond with your child, and build your confidence as a parent/caregiver. This Toolbox covers a range of topics, including the importance of love and connection, different parenting styles, understanding your child and their big feelings, discipline, boundaries, play and lots more.

This is a new and more specific version of our Middle Years Toolbox.  This course is aimed specifically at parents of children 5 – 9 years.

Session 2             Parents
Session 3             Stronger, deeper, closer
Session 4             Heart-led parenting
Session 5             Discipline without shouting, force or fluster
Session 6             Putting it all together

Cost and payment

The cost is $75 per person or $110 per couple. However, our desire is that cost would never be a barrier, and we’d still love you to join us if you’re unable to contribute in this way. There are many other valuable ways to contribute – like bringing a cake to share, or helping pack up. Get in touch, and we’ll get you booked in.

HBCAFC’s Football Fundamentals in Schools Programme – Run during the school term, this programme takes place on the school fields, making it easy for kids and parents, as kids don’t have to travel.

Lunch Clubs or After School Clubs for kids in Years 1 to 6. In these programmes, the kids get to work on their coordination and learn football skills by doing fun activities, playing games and football matches.
