FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

This week we have ongoing pool issues that we are hoping to get on top of. Murphy’s law, the hottest summer on record and our pool is struggling to function on a daily basis!! To help please ensure your child has a swimming cap, next year these will be mandatory. Mr. Lee is doing a great job keeping it clean and filtering correctly and hopefully the pool will be open for the rest of the week.

Date Change for Junior Swimming Sports – This is now on Friday 15th March – Start time at 11.30am at our school pool. (Change of date due to the temperatures getting cooler already).

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Senior Swimming Sports was held at the Waitoki School pool, a great day was had by all who participated.

There were lots of competitive races in the freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke. The placegetters in these will have an opportunity to attend the interschool swimming sports. There were also lots of fun races for everyone to participate in and the traditional house relay which was won this year by Lloyd house.

THIS WEEK

PAT tests (Progressive Achievement Tests) are being taken in all the classes from years 3-8. Progressive Achievement Tests are standardised tests in the core curriculum areas administered and marked by teachers. They give us a very good indication of how your child is doing nationally. The areas tested are Reading Comprehension, Reading Vocab, Maths and Listening. This may also continue into next week as well. For some students this is their first formal test/ exam type situation – all good practice for the future college years.

ICAS Exams (International Tests) are also able to be sat at Wainui School. These are not for everyone though they are a voluntary option and also cost a small fee. We will send some information out re these tests but it is a really good idea to practice to ensure the best outcome can be achieved. More information will come in the next few weeks.

Whole School Assembly Friday 8 March both Kiwi and Pukeko teams will feature at this assembly. The Hellyer cups will be shared week about as we only have 4 not 8. The value we will be celebrating is “Relational”. Please note this is a change of team from what was advertised in last week’s newsletter.

A Motor Cross Team organised by the Glasgow family will be competing under the Wainui School name on Friday. We wish them well and look forward to hearing how they got on.

NEXT WEEK

Winter Sports Registration – See the advertisement below. We have got so big we are having a registration day on Monday 11th March from 3 – 5pm for all families wishing to play netball, hockey and basketball. Thank you to Mr. Irvine, Miss. Rowlands and Mrs. Howard for organising this initiative. Fees for the sports will be set once team numbers have been confirmed, then payment will be made and uniforms distributed for netball. We will also have a “No pay, no play” this year in place.

Junior and Middle School Swimming Sports Friday 15th March, start time 11.30am. These swimming sports include demonstrations of the swimming achieved plus lots of fun races. It involves all years 1-4 students.

COMING UP

Paid Union Meetings around the country for all teachers and Principals. There has been no outcome with our collective pay agreement so this will be under discussion at the meetings. The meeting that our teachers will be attending is on the 18th March, morning and afternoon. The school will be able to remain open because we will send half the teachers in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. We can then ensure adequate supervision is available.

FINALLY

At our recent BOT meeting, we discussed the issue of parking. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has assured us we are over accommodated with off-street parking but are pledging to help reorganise the top carpark when they are improving the bus bay and moving the staff carpark. This is all in the future. We had thought it would have been done over the Christmas holidays but the time frames were unable to be met by the MOE, and have been scheduled for later this year. We ask however that no one parks on the roundabout. This tends to block the bus parking and affect the flow of traffic around the roundabout. Please fill up the bottom carpark first. Thank you.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
