FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING?
Pink Shirt Day – Proudly we all wore our pink shirts on Friday to support the message of Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying! Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
We continue to commit to our schools being places where young people, staff and community feel safe, valued, and respected. At Wainui, our two Year 8 leaders led a fantastic day to promote these messages. Congratulations to Maya Ledger and Xela Odedra for your messages on the day, your enthusiasm to promote this message was awesome. Over 300 cupcakes were baked, enough for us all by these girls and their families.
We were joined by Constable Brian and his teammates, Constable John and Linda from Youth Aid. Constable Brian is an ambassador for Pink Shirt Day and loves coming to celebrate these messages with us at school. Special mention to Zoe Heaton and Sorelle Jonkers-McAllister for baking 300 biscuits that they gave to each of us as a random act of kindness.
THIS WEEK
Whole School Assembly – We will celebrate the value of being Relational /Whanaunatanga which fits very nicely with Pink shirt day! Being kind, being respectful, making friends, playing with, and helping each other are all part of being at school. Sports teams enable us to learn the skills of team play, both on and off the court or field. Being a child is where you learn what is okay in friendship, and what is not. Please remember if your child is having struggles with any of these things, make contact with the teachers, or make contact with Mrs Taylor in learning and behaviour support, or the school counsellor. Sometimes things do go wrong, but everything is able to be worked through.
Communication Survey/ Audit of Communication at Wainui School – One of the Charter goals this year was to audit all forms of communication we have as a school to find out from you all what you like that we do and what you think we could do better or improve on. We are considering having an APP as many schools do. This week a short survey will come home via Newspost and email and in hard copy too. Please take the time to contribute as we are looking to improve our communication.
NEXT WEEK
Takahe Team are off to Camp – Last year COVID-19 put a stop to this but it is great these things are able to happen again. This year the Year 7 & 8s are off to Shakespear Park to the camp there. We wish them a wonderful week, having fun, challenging themselves in outdoor activities and we hope you get some great weather. There are 10 parents attending with Mr Irvine and the Camp leader, Miss Stevenson. Have a wonderful week and we can’t wait to hear of all your adventures!!
Teacher Only Day (TOD) is next Friday 4th June – This is one of the eight days we have been awarded in the conditions for teachers. All the primary schools in the Orewa Kahui Ako, Orewa Primary, Silverdale, Orewa Beach and Dairy Flat School and us are all having TOD’s to enable this to happen. Orewa College is having a half-day. We are relaunching the Kahui Ako/ Community of learning with a keynote speaker Kathryn Burkett.
