Kia ora koutou,
Last week was our first week back, such a positive start to the term, so many smiling faces, so many winter sports teams getting ready for the new season of play. Thank you to the teachers, Mr Irvine, Mrs Howard and Miss Ross for taking sports teams, the uniforms and the information. A huge thank you to to all the coaches. I have seen mums, dads and Grandmas out there coaching, encouraging and preparing the children for their games. Over the next weeks I will introduce you to all the teams and aim to see most teams play at least once over the season. We will report the scores and have some photos of all the coaches, players and managers. This week we have seen hockey teams, netball teams and rippa rugby teams being organised and trained ready to play their competitions. All the very best everyone.
Deer Rustler Trailride was held last Sunday on the magnificent Te Heke Farm – Wainui School is so very fortunate to have had this opportunity to be the benefactors of this event that drew over 500 trail bike riders. Our FOWS (Friends of Wainui School) crew led by Denise Ditchburn (chairperson) and Vivien Bayer (a family member of the Farm and Mum at Wainui School). Mrs Taylor and I went out to meet everyone helping or participating in this event and what an amazing morning we had. We can’t thank the FOWS team enough, the Bayer family for their generosity in opening up the farm to the riders plus of course the Waitemata Motorcycle Club led by past parent Wayne Bolger and his wife Noeline. We will let you know exactly how much was raised from this event once we know. Thank you to all the FOWS Mums and Dads that gave up their Sunday to help; Nikki Browne, Fiona and Jason McIntyre, Clare Welch, Isabelle Blais-Smith, Fiona Roe, Sarah Parsons, Michelle Davies, Vanya Paladin, Catherine Southwick and Kylie Allen. A big thanks to all the riders who came to participate and to all the wonderful friends and family that supported this event. We would also like to acknowledge the Waitemata Motorcycle Club Committee for their help.
THIS WEEK
Road Safety Week!! – Have you seen our students campaigning to slow us all down and remind us of speeds around the school? Our students attended an Auckland Council Road Safety Training day in the first term and came up with their own Slogan; “Slow Down! Kids Around!!”.
Closing Early on Thursday 11th May by 10 minutes – We will ring the school bell 10 minutes early on Thursday afternoon and ask if you can pick up your children 10 minutes earlier. The buses will stay the same. This is to enable the teachers all to attend a very special meeting at Orewa College to launch the Community of Learning. Approximately 250-300 teachers need to find a park at Orewa College to start the meeting at 3.30pm which, as you can imagine, will be a challenge. The Orewa College students are finishing slightly early as well. We really appreciate your help and support, however Miss Ludwig and Mrs De Cort will be on site as well.
Bike Track News – Week two of the timetable of teams bringing their bikes is in force. The Kiwi team (year 3&4’s) are enjoying exclusive use this week. It’s great to see these children having so much fun, according to a few of the children there is a challenging hill or two! The great news is we were presented with a cheque for $5,900 to put towards the bikes from the Harcourt Foundation!! This was a real surprise as it is very hard to be awarded one of these grants. This was presented to us by Harcourts Tandem Realty Ltd Director Karl Martinovich with Isabelle Blais-Smith, Sales & Marketing consultant Silverdale and Chris Breasley and Andrea Svendsen. The container donated by Simone du Bernard, Harcourts Cooper & Co is still on its way. It will need modifying to have two swing or sliding doors (cut out of the side of the container), and a hatch at one end. If anyone has the means or know how to do this please let me know.
Enviro Group has started!! Miss Ross, Mrs Taylor and myself are keen to get children involved in our environment even more and continue the good work Miss Smith began. We have all sorts of ideas in process from more vege gardens, worm farms to raising seedlings. If you would like to be involved please contact Miss Ross, we have in the past had parents as a part of our group. Our children will meet on Mondays at lunchtime. This week the Juicie sales are going towards re-establishing the worm farm.
COMING UP

FINALLY
Please really think about hosting a Japanese student this year!! Thank you to those who have already completed the forms for hosting a Japanese Student. We have a group of 25 students from Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan in the third term of 2017, 30th July – 9th August. If you did not receive your pack of information at the end of last term and are interested in hosting a student for the 10 days, please see the office who have spare packs. There is a meeting on Friday 12th May at 3.15pm straight after Assembly, to talk more about the experience of hosting a Japanese Student and see if you would consider helping out.
And sadly, we will farewell Mr Bint at the end of May. Mr Bint is returning to the family farm in the North. We thank him for all his hard work and will miss his energy and fantastic help around our school.
Ka kite ano,
Gillian Bray
