The newsletter is a day late due to the extreme weather conditions we all experienced yesterday. Thank you everyone for your support with the closure of the school. The buildings themselves are fine and we had power but the difficulty is the flooding of the driveway and carparks and the state of the roads. I am in communication with the Ministry of Education today over what we will do as a Board going forward with this issue of the culvert and stream flooding and the lack of easy access. So despite everything it hasn’t dampened the spirits of us all at Wainui with sports teams practicing, our finery fit for the coronation being worn and Garden to Table starting!! So now we ask that you come out and support our newest fundraiser and fun afternoon “The SHINE-ON Mother’s Day” fashion show!!

Mother’s Day fundraiser -“YOU SHINE with ‘ SHINE-ON”

SHINE-ON Mother’s Day Event – It will be a fabulous afternoon, one where you will be able to graze on platters, have a glass of bubbles, juice or water of course and see the latest fashion modelled by some very familiar faces!! Yes some of the teachers, support staff and mums are your models for the afternoon!! We can’t wait so please get out and support this event. There are some amazing raffles – a wonderful “Saben” handbag on show in the office plus spot prizes and the chance to support our very own local business SHINE-ON whilst contributing to making Wainui a great place to be!! Thank you Melissa Mexted for all your hard work in getting a new event underway!!

Tickets are on sale either on line or come into the office and we can help you out. Come and support this inaugural event, we are all very excited! It’s designed to be a wonderful lead in to Mother’s Day!!

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Sports Teams – 7 Hockey teams are practicing and have started their competition. There are also 7 netball teams, 6 basketball teams and 3 Flippa Ball teams. Thank you to the managers of each sports code, your efficiency in getting all children kitted out, registrations paid and teams playing has been amazing, thank you!! I am sure you will all have a great season, the children love telling us about their games and how they are doing!!

Having the managers; Milly Mexted for Netball, Carin Long for Hockey and Tanya Ledger for Basketball has been amazing for us as it has and has meant our teachers can get on with ensuring sports and equipment is even better in school time. We have increased the amount of sports gear in the playground with our new monitor system introduced by Mr. Luke Cochrane. We are all participating in a weekly session of gymnastics and the bikes are in use almost every day!!

Whanau Ropu – Wainui School with the support and help of parent Donna Greening is trying to consult, achieve our consultation and “success for Maori children” goals in a more meaningful way. We had our first meeting last Friday to set this up and hope in future we will have more parents join us. A few questions have been emailed to all families with children that identify as Maori or Pasifika, we would love your feedback. Big thank you to Donna for getting a more inclusive way of consulting going. Please do not hesitate to ask Jason Irvine, Donna Greening or myself any questions about what we are doing.

2022 Pink Shirt Day with Constables Bryan, John and Sam.

Friday 19th May is PINK SHIRT DAY – Constable Bryan is the Pink Shirt Ambassador in the police and always loves to come to Wainui School to start his day. Here is a photo from last year of Constable Bryan and Constable John with some of our students dressed for the day.

This year year 8 leaders Lyla-Rose Muaiava, Madi Gooding and Eva Pengelly are the organisers.

They have planned our morning to start with an assembly followed by the parade. Fun activities will follow all to raise awareness of the anti-bullying messages, that Pink Shirt Day is all about.

COMING UP

Teacher Only Day (TOD) 2nd June – Our teachers will be joining all the teachers from the Orewa Kahui Ako schools; Orewa College, Silverdale Primary School,  Dairy Flat School, Orewa Primary School, Orewa Beach School, Auhutoetoe School and Nukumea School together with Wainui School are all collaborating together in our learning journey. The last time we did this was before the pandemic so we are excited we can all get together.

Whole School Assembly Friday afternoon 19th May – Pukeko Team will be featuring in this assembly and will perform and share their learning. The Hellyer Cups will be presented to one child from each of the Pukeko teams classes. Hellyer Cups are awarded to children who exemplify the schools 5R’s, to children who are not necessarily top academics but are achieving to the best of their ability. We will be awarding 3 values certificates per class and the student leaders in our year 7&8 classes their leadership badges. All families are welcome to these special times of celebration.

FINALLY

Attendance – The Ministry of Education is very focussed on ensuring all children abide by the Education & Training Act 2020 under sections 36, 48, 49 & 242. This states that every School Board must take all reasonable steps to make sure students attend school when it’s open. If you as a family intend to take leave for a holiday or need to have time away for other family reasons please email to request this leave to myself. This leave will be awarded but you need to be aware your child will be marked on our roll and recorded as a “G” (Holiday during term time) in our system. Please also note we don’t supply learning programmes for children who are away from school. BUT on a very positive note Wainui School’s attendance is really good overall. In term 1 we had an overall average of 91% which is excellent. We know opportunities for travel occur and many have family overseas and need to regularly travel. We will grant your leave and wish you well and look forward to your return. Please do not hesitate to ask questions if you have any.

Remember to bring your sports uniform for the sports teams photos. Personalised order forms will come out 1-2 weeks after Photo Day.
