FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
With exactly a week to go until we shut the gates for the year, it is with pride we can celebrate!!
Thank you community for supporting our annual Christmas in the Country. What a fantastic turnout it was and so wonderful to see you all!! We were so lucky with the weather enabling us all to join together and celebrate. For the first time ever we ran out of roast pork and sausages!! We are usually eating it as a staff for lunch the following day. I hope everyone found something to eat, whether it was a toffee apple or some delicious Christmas goodies at the Christmas Market run by the Year 7 & 8 students.
Wasn’t the enterprise market fabulous? This was the culmination of a unit of work run by the Intermediate area of the school, whereby the students had to run their own stall. They had to come up with a product, either make it or obtain, pay for their table to sell the products, market, and work out the prices and then sell the product. We can certainly let you know we have some amazing entrepreneurs in this group!! Some of the groups have made an excellent profit after all the expenses were removed.
Thank you to Gracie from PForm this year. All the dances were choreographed by Gracie and each team, except the Tui team had a few practices. I think you will agree these were just great!! Well done to all the individual performers, Tina, Daniel and Ryder from the Tui team singing and Ryder Oliff and Phoenix Sweetman for their singing and guitar performance, you were all so confident and made us very proud!!
A huge thank you to Leslie Ann Gray, a member of the FOWS group who took on the organisation of Christmas in the Country ensuring all the meat was ordered, everything was set up, the raffles wrapped and able to run, Harcourts Cooper and Co coffee and cone were there and the whole evening was the success it was. Please think about offering a hand in the future, we do need more people to help run our events, it makes a huge difference.
Kayla and April in their cage as part of Jingle Bail raised $796.50 ($405.50 at Chrismas in the Country and $391.00 from the juicies sale last week). This money raised goes towards Kids Can. Well Done Girls!
WHAT ELSE HAS BEEN HAPPENING
Farewell Assembly for Mrs Collins – We had a fabulous assembly and lovely afternoon tea! Mrs Collins is retiring after 45 years of service in the education profession and 14 years at Wainui School. She has been a much loved member of our staff and we wish her all the very best for retirement. Luckily for us Mrs Allen will now be a permanent class teacher and will be full time as the New Entrant Teacher.
THIS WEEK
Graduation for our Year 8’s and Prize Giving – An amazing night was had by all the graduating students of 2020 at Northridge Country Lodge. 30 students graduated at a “Luau ” a Hawaiian tropical themed night!! A huge thank you to Nicky Holmes and Vanya Paladin, parents of Vinnie and Kayla who transported us to a tropical island for our celebrations. It was a very special night to celebrate for all the students and their families, 100 of us in total. Thank you to Jon Bayer for catering in the kitchen and the Year 7’s who were still, as is the tradition able to be the wait people last night helped by parents Pete Adlam and Dee Robinson.
Of the 31 students graduating 11 of these students began with us as New Entrants!! We farewell 15 families as this is the end of your journey with us!! Listed here are all of the names. We wish you all the very best for the future:

Farewell to the families leaving, you have contributed so much to the school, the fundraising, the sports teams coaching, going to camp and helping with graduation.
NEXT WEEK
On the last day, we will farewell all families, children, and staff leaving. We say farewell to Miss Mahler who is leaving to become the Manager of an ECE Centre and Miss Smith who rejoined us and picked up a junior class. Miss Smith is off to start a new life on a Flower Farm in Marlborough. We also farewell Alice Hill who goes on Maternity Leave.
COMING UP 2021
Staff for 2021
We have a full complement of staff for the beginning of the year. We welcome Marion Robinson to our staff next year. Marion will be in the Kiwi Team in Year 3 & 4. She is currently teaching at Kingsway School.
Pukeko Team – Years 0 – 2 – Shelley Ross – Team Leader, Kylie Allen, Halena Howard, Marinda Van Dyk and Kyla Jackson.
Kiwi Team – Years 3 & 4 – Avril Richards – Team Leader, Marion Robinson and Pam Miller.
Tui Team – Years 5 & 6 – Sandy Blackburn – Team Leader, Andrea Goodyer, Rody O’Reilly, Keon Ng and Lauren Jenkins.
Takahe Team – Years 7 & 8 – Leanne Stevenson – Team Leader, Jason Irvine, Deputy Principal.
Classrooms – The new building will be completed to start the year!! The Kiwi Team will be moving into this as it is 3 classrooms with breakout rooms!!
The Tui Team will all be in refurbished rooms by the end of March, Totara, Kowhai and Nikau. These classrooms are all being refurbished after the holidays so they will be in Miro and Manuka rooms to start the year.
FINALLY
This is the final newsletter for the year!! What a year it has been, the year of COVID-19. We cannot, and will not ever forget this unprecedented year and the effects it has had on all we have planned and achieved.
I am thankful we are able to operate at Level 1, now with relativity no restrictions and we have had an amazing Term 4. As a result of this I must thank the teachers, all of you at home for supporting all we have done!! I am so thankful to a wonderful FOWS group, we were able to fundraise and almost meet our goal of $35,000. The final total of Christmas in the Country is being completed this week!
Thank you to each and every one of you for your support, your flexibility when things changed, and above all for being a part of this Wainui School Community. Enjoy the freedom we have in New Zealand to have Christmas with our families and friends. I look forward to meeting up again in the New Year when we are refreshed and ready for 2021.
