FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Wai Factor has been so much fun and so well organised by this year’s Year 8 Student leaders!!.  We are now looking ahead to the finals – remember to keep practicing if you have made it.  Here is a message from the organisers of the competition:

Wai Factor Finals!

Kia ora, Wai Factor finals are coming up on Tuesday the 6th of July, week 10. The finals will start at 2:00pm and will continue on until school finishes.  Congratulations to all the participants this year, your acts were incredible and we loved watching and judging them. We were blown away by every act we saw and were amazed by the talent that Wainui School has. As always it was extremely hard to pick who made it through.

This year for the Wai Factor finals we will be having a very special guest judge come in to judge the finalists. We will also still have the criteria which can gain you a higher score if followed through. The criteria are below;

  1. Creativity And Originality – How creative and different is your act?
  2. Practice – How much have you practiced your act?
  3. How entertaining is your act?
  4. Confidence – How confident are you onstage?
  5. Time Limit – Stick to 2:00 as your time limit?

We just can’t wait to see the finalists perform their acts, we know they’re going to be amazing. But until then, ka kite ano!

Charlotte, Bella and Taliah

Road Speed ConcernsWell done to Leslie Ann Linn, Chairperson of the FOWS group. Leslie Ann is relentlessly pushing the campaign to slow the speeds down at the gate especially at pick up time. Last Friday Chris Penk our MP joined myself and Leslie Ann at the gate at 3:00 pm to see the problem. Chris was very concerned at the narrowness of the road outside the gate, the speed of many of the trucks and cars moving through as you as parents were either arriving or leaving. This will continue to be taken to Auckland Transport to get some action.

NEXT WEEK

PUMS Paid Union Meetings – Thursday 1st July – All teachers who are union members have a Paid Union Meeting off-site for 3 hours. Rather than close the school, we will ensure all programs and activities continue for all classes. This will be happening throughout the country, teachers joining these meetings to talk about their collective contract that includes both pay and conditions. You may hear more through the media about this topic.

MATARIKI

Next week, Te Kura o Wainui (Wainui School) will be acknowledging Matariki, which officially started on the 19th of June and finishes on the 11th of July. For those not familiar with Matariki, it is the beginning of the Māori New Year. It is a time of renewal and celebration in New Zealand that begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster (the Pleiades or Seven Sisters). Matariki is a time to gather with family and friends to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. E tamariki ma (children) of Te Kura o Wainui will spend the week engaged in activities based on Matariki, including making ngā whetū (stars), singing waiata (songs), and engaging in a house day on Thursday, organised and run by our Year 8 House Captains. During the Kiwi Team assembly on Friday, the 9th of July, all classes will share a waiata they have been learning. If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact tumuaki tuarua (Deputy Principal) Jason Irvine on jirvine@wainui.school.nz

Ag Day Information – # 3 – If you are thinking about getting an animal for Ag Day, July 1st is only 9 days away!!!  To enter an animal, the lamb, calf or kid goat must be born between 1st July and 15th September.  The school holidays provide an excellent opportunity for the children to bond with their animals -spending time feeding, loving and caring for their new friend!!!  We are ordering the day old chicks again too (Brown Shavers) from Northern Hyline. Orders to: exo@wainui.school.nz Chicks are $10.00 each.  Chicks need to be ordered by Friday 9th July.  The chicks will be delivered to school after their August 18th hatch date.

The Kiwi Team – We have been on a journey of creating awareness of our single-use plastic usage and the impact that it has on our environment. In taking our learning further, we took ACTION by making bees wax wraps helping us reduce our single-use plastic wrappers in our lunchboxes.   We would like to thank Haruru Gold for their generous contribution of bees wax for our project. You have made a difference.

Thinking Caps – See attached Term 3 programme

Winter Sports Teams Term 3- Flippaball – We have a parent who is keen to coach a Year 5/6 Flippaball team.  We can enter a Year 5/6 team and a Year 3/4 team provided we can get a parent to manage/coach the Year 3/4 team.  Flippa Ball is a precursor to Waterpolo. It develops the players’ water confidence and their swimming ability as well as teamwork and ball skills. It is played on a Sunday afternoon from 4pm at Stanmore Bay Leisure Centre’s pool.  Teams are 6 players in the pool plus the goalie. It can be mixed teams. It is played in the shallow end of the pool using adapted waterpolo and flippaball rules. Sunday League term 3 start date is the 1 August – 26 September 2021(9 Weeks)

Expressions of interest for term 3 and for more information please email the Sports Coordinator Mrs Halena Howard by Friday 25th June. Thank you. hhoward@wainui.school.nz
