FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Hot off the press tonight as I write this newsletter, an update from the Government and Ministry of Education – Minister Tinetti has sent all schools a letter outlining clearly the way forward.

Thank you to the school community, for everything you have done to keep transmission of COVID-19 to a minimum. Your efforts have made a difference. Outlined below are the changes which take effect from 11.59pm (12 September):

COVID-19 Update

  • Household contacts of COVID-19 cases will no longer need to isolate, but instead should undertake a RAT test every day for 5 days.  It will also mean that children and young people who are asymptomatic household contacts of confirmed cases will be able to attend school in person, including for assessments and national end of year exams.
  • Mask wearing is no longer strongly recommended.
  • All the other recommended public health measures will stay in place as we know they reduce the spread of infectious illnesses including COVID-19. These include ensuring our indoor spaces are well-ventilated, maintaining good hand hygiene, encouraging everyone to cough or sneeze into elbows and, most importantly, staying home and getting tested if they have COVID-19 symptoms.

Thank you for your ongoing support in protecting our community.

THIS WEEK

  • Maori Language Week
  • Wai Factor Finals
  • Board Elections
  • School Disco
  • InterSchool Cross Country Year 5&6
  • Cultural Diversity Day and World Gratitude Day

WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK

  • Maori Language Week:  “Te Wiki o te Reo Māori” This year is extra special as 14th September marks the 50th anniversary of the Māori Language Petition, an event that led to many of the kaupapa we have today, including Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.  At Wainui School today the new T-Shirts for our kapa haka performance group are being blessed by Whaea LeeAnne. We can’t wait to see these being worn at our performance on the 27th September.
  • Wai Factor Finals:  Kia Ora, We are your Wai Factor organisers for 2022. We hope that everyone has had fun so far, we have really enjoyed watching all the performances. Judging the performances was such a difficult task but we got there eventually and we have our top 12 acts for the finals. All finalists names have been announced at assemblies. All of the finalist groups and acts will be getting a letter to give back to the year 8s with the name of their song and the artist to help make things a little easier for the comms team. Please ensure that the letter gets handed back before the 14th of September 2022. For the finals seeing as there aren’t as many acts, all the acts have no time limits but a preferable around 3mins-3:30mins. We hope our finalists are getting help from practice and can’t wait to show their amazing acts on the 16th of September at 1:30pm. All parents are welcome. We hope to see you there. Sincerely, Violet Clayton and Samantha Neely.

Board Elections – The successful candidates will be announced this week. Counting of the votes occurs on Tuesday 13th September, the new Board is announced and takes office on Wednesday 14th September. Thank you to Mel Ludwig for once again running an excellent election and to all the candidates for putting your names forward. We look forward to seeing who our new Board will be and getting to know you all.

NEXT WEEK

  • School Disco –  It has been a long time since we have been able to have a disco. Life is certainly returning to “normal”!! Wainui School Disco is Friday, the 23rd September – Juniors (Yr 1-4) 5.00 – 6.30pm, Seniors (Yr 5-8) 7.00 – 9.00pm. The annual Wainui School Disco is back! The theme of this year’s disco will be Royalty, come dressed as a King, Queen, Prince or Princess or even a Jester. Tickets on sale in the office for $15 each.  The ticket price will include a  juicie, water and hot dog. The tickets will be available for purchase from Wednesday 14th September.
  • InterSchool Cross Country Year 5&6 – A team will be representing us at Shakespear Park InterSchool Cross Country on Thursday 23rd September. Mr Cochrane will be leading this team, Mr Irvine and Mr Wotton will be attending as this event is organised by our school for all the Hibiscus Coast schools. It is always a great day, another event we have not been able to hold for a few years!!
  • Cultural Diversity Day and World Gratitude Day – Is Wednesday 22nd September. This event is organised by Sunny Odedra and will enable us to celebrate the many nationalities that make up our school. Each class will have a world map to mark on where children come from. We will be dressing in a national costume, flag colours or even wearing artifacts for that country. Sunny would like everyone to share food/ kai on this day, it could be dish from your culture or a family favourite able to be shared at a class lunch. Finally we will all celebrate World Gratitude Day by writing a message of gratitude to put in a class jar of gratitude then we will all come together in the afternoon to put our messages in one large jar.

COMING UP

The Queen, her corgi and a guard by Abigail Watt.

We pay tribute to The Queen with a Public Holiday announced for Monday 26th September – The Queen’s dedication to public service has been an inspiration to children and adults alike over the past 70 years.  Like so many, I feel privileged and lucky to have lived through the second Elizabethan age, and was saddened to hear of her death.

FINALLY

I am privileged to be able to attend the New Zealand Principals Conference in Christchurch at the Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre this week. I will join hundreds of my colleagues to explore the theme of Aotearoa and Beyond, network with colleagues and share ideas. Jason Irvine will be deputising in my absence and as always is approachable and able to support you with any needs.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
