FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

As the term marches on quickly we are all cogniscent of the fact that this time of the year gets busier and busier, but is still fun and a time to celebrate! We have a number of events planned to celebrate the end of the year and a few things we need to finish as well.

Teachers are all currently finishing their end of year assessments and writing the summative report for your child. Miss Ludwig and I are planning the budget for 2023, and reviewing this year’s budget. Big thank you to everyone who has contacted the office to check donation contribution, it is most appreciated!! Thank you.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Principal for the Day – Abigail and Genevieve Watt had a wonderful day last Friday ensuring we were all dressed in our “wacky” outfits and had fun; making sock puppets, participating in treasure hunts and leading a fabulous Assembly. Thank you Watt family for your generosity in supplying lots of chocolate treasure, and adding to our trophy collection!! In case you are wondering to be Principal for the Day was the result of an auction at Quiz Night, a FOWS fundraiser back in term 3.

THIS WEEK

Junior Athletics – Friday 25th November is the Junior/ Middle schools turn to have their Athletics on our school field!! Up until this last week they have all been practicing long jump, high jump, sprinting and throwing – we look forward to a great day with fine weather!! Parents are welcome to come along and cheer on the students as they compete for glory! Click the link for further information and the timetable for the day. COMING UP

End of Year Events – A number of events are planned for the end of the year and have been on the school calendar for a while. Here are a few more details to ensure you can plan for these in your diary!!

  1. Christmas in the Country – the staff serve you!! Ham buns, sausages, strawberries and chocolate!!

Christmas in the Country – Thursday 8th December, this year we will be on the field!! Come and join in the fun, bring a picnic rug, a blanket and the whole family!! Each team will perform, dance and lead some Christmas songs.

2. Prizegiving – Thursday 15th December 1pm start. Please note, this year Prizegiving will be a senior Prizegiving only for years 5-8. With the loss of learning and effects of the pandemic over the last few years it was time to reassess how we as teachers reward our age groups and change!!

3. Picnic – Years 1 & 2, 3 & 4 will be having a special end of year picnic each in our bush!!

  •  Year 1&2 Picnic Tuesday 13th December
  •  Year 3&4 Picnic Wednesday 14th December.
  • Details will be shared by the team leaders and the teachers. It will be wear your Christmas festive clothing, bring something to share for lunch and have lots of fun.

End of Year Reports – All teachers are in the process of writing the summative report for 2023. Much thought, evaluation, moderation between teachers, assessment data collated and careful analysing progress and achievement your child has made occurs. This year if your child is in year 2 and above Data is entered into our Pact system for Reading, Writing and Mathematics to give a computer generated best fit graph. There is also a summative written comment for the Arts, Inquiry Learning, Physical Education and Health as well as a general comment. The general comment will refer to your child’s attitudes and values demonstrated as well as social and emotional elements. These will be sent home on Thursday 15th December. It will also contain your child’s class and teacher for 2023.

Japanese Sister School Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan – Many of you will remember prior to the pandemic each year we would  host a group of students from Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan Junior High at our school. This of course had to all stop with the pandemic. Last week I was contacted to see if we were keen to host a group again!! We really did build an amazing relationship with the school over the last 10 years. They love coming to Wainui School, many families had billeted/ hosted a student, sometimes two. Would we like to do this again?

A group of 15-20 students, from their junior high (13/14 years old) and a couple of teachers would come again, for 9/10 days they could be hosted/billeted by our families. The age difference always worked, our children always made friends. The host family does get reimbursed for expenses and a little bit extra. The school also gets paid funds to host the school, it is a fundraiser!! We all get to know some young people from a different culture than our own and share “kiwi” life with them. At school they have English lessons and also spend time with our students. It was a very successful partnership with lots of wins for us and the students.

My big question to you all as families is:

Would you be interested in hosting a student in your family now the pandemic is over? Please let me know yes or no and a comment, before I say yes and commit to this for July 2023.

FINALLY

Lost Property – I have attached photos of the huge tables full of unclaimed clothing, shoes etc. I am not sure we have ever had quite so much!! Please, please help us out and come and find what you have lost. Please label all items, this way we can easily return them to their owners. This will all be sent to a charity at the end of the year.

Student’s Writing – Writing has been a real focus for us this year! Mrs Millar and Kawakawa class have been learning how to write persuasively!! We think Preston has really “nailed” this style of writing!! Preston Catchpole is 8 years old!!

Come to Wainui School

Firstly because it is fun and you can learn. Learning is fun. And all the adults built Wainui School.

Secondly, it cost a lot of money to build a school like Wainui.  You should be thankful that you are here because your parents paid for the school, there’s a court and 3 playgrounds and there’s so much nature. There’s around 20 classes and there are soccer goals, basketball hoops and the teachers help you. Finally, you do spelling and art, writing, reading, poems and family trees, its lots of fun.

Wainui School is the best for kids, come to our school.
