FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Welcome back to the usual weekly communication!! One week since Cyclone Gabrielle, hard to believe!! I know everyone has a story but for most of us we are feeling so thankful as we watch the horrendous disaster of the Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and even the Far North. Thank you for your patience as we change dates, times and even when we could open or not. We now know the generator enables us to operate our school, have water, all toilets and some communication and internet. Now we just need a radio station and we could communicate with you all and let you know in the future when we can open!! So yes, we are all still smiling and very happy to be back at school!!

This week’s focus:

  • MEET US ALL”
  •  FOWS Meeting
  • Whole School Assembly
  • Year 8 Leaders 2023
  • EOTC Trips Tui and Takahe Teams
  • School Donations
  • Board Meeting

THIS WEEK

MEET US ALL” Thursday 23rd February 5:30pm – This is our first invite to all parents and caregivers to come and meet everyone, staff, Board, FOWs which helps make our school be the best place it can be!! Click here for information – Meet us All

You will meet us all in the hall at 5:30pm, each representative will talk briefly about their role and the major goals/ focus for the year approx 45 minutes. You can then go with your child to the classroom and meet the teacher, see the class and have an informal chat.

You can register your child for sports teams, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Flippa ball etc. The call will start for team managers and coaches each team will need these.

The School Donation will be able to be contributed via eftpos, or cash on this night. It would be wonderful if we could meet our targets for our budget early in the year. The school donation is necessary to meet our budget as we do not get any extra funding because of our EQI (Equity Index number) that has replaced the decile rating.

Donation is $200 per child,  if you have have more than one child it is $175 for the next child, we cap it at two children!! This amount has not risen for a number of years, a decision made by the Wainui School Board.

Better Start Literacy (BSLA) information will be shared by the junior school team at 4:30pm prior to the meeting. Click here the invitation – Whanau invitation

FOWS Meeting – Friends of Wainui School (like the original PTA) is lots of fun with a focus on helping raise our much needed funds!! Come to the first meeting on Wednesday 22nd February at 7:00 pm in the staffroom. This group is literally the back bone of our community, without the support and hard work of this wonderful group of parents we could not do what we do!! BUT we need more members!! Don’t be shy if you are new to the school, come and meet new people and make new friends. This is where your ideas for fundraising and needs can be voiced!! Or if you have been around for awhile come and help out and be part of making the school a better place for our children!! The meeting starts at 7:00 pm and will involve a social time with a glass of wine or a cup of tea/ coffee and nibbles.

Whole School Assembly led by Tui and Takahe Team – Our first assembly for the year is this Friday at 2:00 pm!! Everyone is welcome! We will be introducing our year 8 leaders. Tui and Takahe team will share their exciting start to the year and what they have been up to. The Hellyer cups will be awarded at this assembly to one person from each of this teams classes. These are our most coveted awards and each teacher thinks very carefully about who they award these to. Each class has three certificates to award, two for the recently focussed value of Respect and one for a value of their choice. Everyone is welcome at these assemblies, if you are free do join us!!

Year 8 Leaders 2023 – Mr Irvine, Mrs Annaliese Hewitt (a Wainui School Board Member) and myself had a wonderful morning last Friday listening to the speeches of this years year 8 class as they applied for the various leadership positions we have at Wainui School. Sometimes we create new ones or change these as the need arises. I can honestly say every year I am so inspired at the creativity, enthusiasm, confidence and the innovation our young people show!! Congratulations to every single year 8 that made a speech, we are so excited for this year! You were all awesome!!  I always work with our student councillors on various projects. Friday’s we will share our ideas with you as sometimes other adults in our community can help us!!

Here are our leaders for the year and their positions. We will share more with you over the term.

NEXT WEEK

Board Meeting – Our first Board meeting for the year is Tuesday 28th February. Board members are Pip Catchpole, Presiding Member, Joe Long (Property), Annaliese Hewitt (Community), Chad Mexted (Finance) and Chris Scott (Special Projects) and Jason Irvine (Staff Rep). We meet 10 times a year, Board meetings are a public meeting, any member of the community is able to join us. Please do let the Board Secretary Mel Ludwig know your intentions.

We regularly review policy and also ask for the community feedback on this, please do so as it helps us to keep current and gain the community voice.

COMING UP

Maori and Pacifika Consultation Followup – As a result of our annual Maori consultation held in November last year, we now have a new exciting way forward. Mr Jason Irvine, parent Donna Greening and I have been doing lots of communicating since about how we can do this better in a more meaningful whanau related way!! All parents of children identified as Maori and Pacifika will be invited to a panui to start our engagement with you as whanau in a more meaningful way. We have dates to confirm around this and a simple form coming your way by email. We very much look forward to engaging with you!!

FINALLY

This week began with an absolutely wonderful act of kindness from a complete stranger to us!! Maria from the “Happy Kiwi Cafe” in Silverdale arrived at our school on Monday afternoon to give us a card containing $500 worth of cash!! Maria and her team have a tin on the counter and customers all year fill it with change!! Every year for the past 18 years she has given the money to a school in the community!! This year it was our school – Mel and I just could not believe it!! A huge thank you to the “Happy Kiwi Cafe” team led by Maria. The Cafe is on Agency Lane in Silverdale, pop in for a coffee and say a big thank you!! I for one don’t think cash should disappear any time soon for many reasons.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
