FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Welcome back to a routine, a return to life at Covid-19 Level 2!! At the end of the first day, everyone has left feeling very happy to be back with their class, teacher and friends.  No doubt you as families are enjoying a return to our freedom at home and at school.

There are a number of requirements at Covid-19 Level 2 we need to adhere to. I want to congratulate us all!! Thank you for:

  • Drop, kiss, and going in the morning (we know it is hard for some, but actually, it does help many children self manage and become independent)
  • Pick up and keeping socially distanced as we can only have limited numbers at gatherings – 100
  • Being so happy and cheerful in the mornings.  Mrs De Cort and I love seeing everyone in the mornings fresh and ready for a new day!!
  • Supporting distance learning again, enabling your child to connect online and keeping some learning going. It is so “not” the usual way we learn at school, so many of you don’t have good wifi connections as well or too many people in the house need to use it, so give yourself a pat on the back for supporting this again.

Parents of Kiwi Team – In the new block, please can you refrain from coming too close to the doors at the end of the day, it is tempting with the building so close to the driveway to do this or grab your child early but this makes it difficult for the teachers to pack up once your child sees you, plus we need to socially distance.  Please wait away from the front and back concrete deck areas.  Thank you!

Level 2 Covid-19 –  Still does have some limitations as to what we can do and is therefore affecting some of the usual programs that would run at this time of the year. The most obvious being swimming. For the senior school, competitive swimming sports were due to be held this week. Unfortunately, the Year 7 & 8 Kaipara Swimming Sports have been cancelled and the planned Wainui Swimming Sports (Years 5 – 8) booked to be held at Waitoki School have also been cancelled. Mr Irvine and the teachers have done a great job of moving some things but unfortunately, Covid-19 has put a stop to some of the events. The off-site events are the most difficult to change.

The great news is we can still have the swimming lessons at Northern Arena next week!! Above all this initiative is to improve all children swimming in Years 5 – 8. All detailed information has been emailed to you in a separate letter.

Both because of the limitations of numbers – the Covid-19 Level 3 rule being no more than 100 at a gathering

THIS WEEK

Classes are back into it – Please remember we have literally only been at school for 12 days – it is challenging for everyone as routines are interrupted. If you are feeling anxious about this as a parent, please do not hesitate to talk to our school Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO) – Wendy Taylor, or even the school counsellor, Tracey Munton who is here on Thursday’s.  She is available for parents to see as well. Programs are well planned in the teams and up and running, but obviously not as far ahead as they usually are at this time of the year.

Year 8 School Leaders – Congratulations to all the Year 8 leaders.  Thank you for waiting to hear your positions, we were so proud of all of you, the speeches you gave and the excitement and plans you shared with us.

These are the leaders for 2021 – We look forward to getting to see you develop in your roles.

COMING UP

Bike A Thon – Thursday 15th April

Our annual Bike-a-thon fundraiser is just around the corner!  SPONSORSHIP NEEDED!  The Bike-a-thon is an annual event and our first fundraiser for the year.  This is a really fun event for all the children and families, and everyone is welcome to attend the day.   The children complete laps of the bike track, according to their year groups in a set time period which is appropriate for their age.   In order to make this event a huge success, we are seeking support from key local organisations.  We are looking for financial support as well as prizes to help encourage our students to raise as much as they can for our bike-a-thon.

Sponsorship options below:

Overall Event Sponsor         $1,500.00
Gold Corporate Sponsors   $100 – $500
Prize donations                       Anything gratefully received

Prize Donations – We would very much like to focus our prizes for this event around physical activity or opportunities for spending time with friends and whanau.  Examples of prizes we would love to provide for our participants include (but not limited too); bikes, scooters, balls, sporting goods vouchers, sporting equipment, vouchers for family activities such as movies, bowling, climbing, mini golf etc.  We recognise our supporters in our weekly school newsletters, our facebook page, and our school website, the event itself and of course our online fundraising website too.

The earlier we receive a donation, the more advertising coverage your business will receive in the weeks leading up to the event! (If you do choose to sponsor our event, please email the appropriate company logo that we are able to use in order to promote your business).   The funds raised from this event will go to sustaining the levels of support in our school with Teacher Aides, continuing to develop and upgrade our play areas and continuing to ensure levels of technology, computers and robotics areas continue.  Any physical donations / vouchers or financial support can be sent to the school office or contact me and I can arrange collection. ANY donation is greatly appreciated!

If you would like to donate, please contact Mel Mayes on 021 2380577 or email me at fows@wainui.school.nz for further details.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
