FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Seems so much has happened in a week, I trust all of you as families are negotiating your way through the events of Christchurch. Schools around the country are all responding in their own ways. We had a special time together yesterday morning to show our support for the people of Christchurch and to acknowledge New Zealand is feeling very sad at this present time. It is ok to feel sad, if you want to ask a question or talk about it this is ok too. All the students in the year 5 to 8 classes did have discussions, feel free to talk about this with your child/ children.

Lockdown and Safety – We will be reviewing and practising these procedures but we need your help!! We need up to date cell phone numbers and  email addresses from everyone. We will be practising sending you a message. Please email your updated details to exo@wainui.school.nz. Thank you.

WHAT ELSE HAS BEEN HAPPENING

Swimming – Pukeko and Kiwi team swimming displays, demonstrations and competitions were held last Friday. What a wonderful turnout of parents, grandparents and family supporters!! Swimming almost daily for most of our children enables them to gain water confidence, and improve in so many ways!! Well done teams for a wonderful day of sharing the skills and programmes. We are so fortunate to have a pool. Just a note, the padlock has been missing since Friday afternoon, we would love it back as it is the one all the key holders have a key for!! Please check your child’s bag for us, you just never know.

Year 7&8 Interschool Swimming Competition was also held last Friday. Congratulations to Marley Straka year 7, Marley won every race he entered. Congratulations to Bradyn Yacyshen who also obtained a number of places, 1st in the Medley, 1st in Freestyle, 1st in butterfly, 2nd in backstroke, and Waimauku.

Sports Registrations were very successful!! Did you know we now have in the making 9 Netball teams and 8 hockey teams!! Wow, that is a lot of students involved and playing winter sport fantastic!!

Student Voice – Ty Browne Hale Year 8 Student Councillor – Bio:

Kia ora, Ko Ty toku ingoa. I am one of Student Councillors for 2019. I love sport and when I mean love, I mean it. Over the past 3 weeks I’ve had Ramesh Lakmal an ex Sri Lankan international cricket player to come in and showWainuii children the basics of cricket. Cricket is a sport I enjoy so it is awesome that I can give other kids this experience. This will carry on for another week. At the end of this we will be donated a jam packed bag of cricket gear. This is one of my great ideas as I have many more to make this school better than it already is.

MX Challenge – On Friday 8th March a group of Wainui children attended the School MX Challenge in Tauranga. It included Primary, Intermediate and High School children from all over NZ with a record number of 380 riders.

The competition was tough but the Wainui children showed true resilience after a couple of crashes and knockbacks they all gave it their best. It was a great experience for some of these children who had never raced at this level.

With motocross becoming very popular amongst our Wainui children we are hoping to attend again next year and wrangling a bigger team.

The needs for the family are identified and how each service is going to provide support. This service allows for families to tell their story once to everyone at the same time. A plan is then agreed upon in order for the family move forward. Strengthening Families is offered at no cost.

Please contact the Helensville Women & Family Centre on 09 420 7992 for further information or for assistance in accessing this service.
