FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
Despite the awful rain and wind, we have so much that is fun and interesting at school!! Thank you for being so helpful and patient on Monday at pick up. As we are all well aware it is one driveway in and out. On that note Leslie Ann Linn, Chairperson of the FOWS group has arranged for our MP Chris Penk to revisit our school at 3:00 pm on Friday to see what it is like, and keep the communication going around the need for the speed to be dramatically dropped around our school gates. Please join us if you can.
THIS WEEK
This began with Years 5 – 8 participating in the Science Roadshow!! Our hall was transformed with all sorts of hands-on interactive experiments to demonstrate scientific phenomenons and get us all thinking!! What a fantastic day, especially as it was so wet. See photos below.
Football – interschool Hibiscus Coast Year 5 & 6 is back on today – We wish Mr Ng, Mr O’Reilly and the 4 teams of students (2 girls and 2 boys) a great day, less rain, and a fun day.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
Wai Factor – The first round of auditions have all been completed. A huge congratulations to Charlotte Robinson and Talia Minton for leading this along with judges and helpers, Bella Browne Hale, Emily Adlam and Ollie Smith for all your hard work to get the auditions done and judged.
Congratulations to all the contestants. We were all blown away by your confidence, your give-it-a-go attitude and we loved every single item. So much fun and entertainment. Yesterday all the semi-finalists received a letter to say they are now in the semi-finals starting on Wednesday. There were over 60 auditions in total – amazing!!
Special thank you to the tech team of Logan Grey, Ben Prestige, and Jurgen Bezuidenhout for managing to get the music cued and the microphones going. No easy feat. Thank you to our two show hosts, Shiva Sivakumaran and Destiny Harris Hatley – well done we loved your outfits and positive comments.
Whole School Assembly Friday 18th June – Takahe team will present thoughts from camp. We will celebrate and focus on the school value of Resilience / Manawanuitanga.
Year 3 & 4 Inquiry Team.
This wonderful group of students from the kiwi team has been spreading the word, their knowledge and passion for single-use plastic with their posters and their information. Well done, this is an example of authentic inquiry.
NEXT WEEK
Lego Day – Olly Smith, a Year 8 councilor has a passion for lego and is wanting everyone to participate. He will start his vision with one class – Rata and set up some challenges for these children next Friday 25th June.
COMING UP
Life Education Van is coming – 5th – 9th July – Always a winner, this “truck” that brings Harold (the giraffe) a teacher and a classroom inside the truck enables us in our classes to explore a range of “life skills”.
Quiz Night is back – Last year COVID-19 stopped these events but this year it’s all go. This annual night for the adults of the community is always great fun, a chance to celebrate, relax meet those neighbours you have been meaning to catch up with. The FOWS group have been planning this over the last term and it is looking to be great. Thank you to Annaliese Hewitt and Nikki Mallon for all your work on this event. Tables of 10 are the maximum but if you don’t have that many please let the office know and we can hook you up with others, even if it is just one or two people.
FINALLY
The second part of our changes to reports is included here.
Reporting to parents
Our report forms are undergoing a change this year, using the Progress and Consistency Tool that reports to parents on progress and achievement.
Our PaCT report will be informing parents of the Teacher Judgements for Reading, Writing, and Maths. These are in graph form, reporting on progress over time, and they have several key elements:
- Progress chart: (A little like a Plunket growth chart) The student’s progress in relation to both curriculum expectations and typical student progress and a projection of the student’s likely progress over the next year.
- Describing progress: A short description that gives an overview of what students can typically do at the part of the scale that the student is achieving at. The next steps to move to the next level of the curriculum are also described.
- Current achievement: The student’s most recent achievement profile across the aspects of the PaCT reading, writing, or mathematics framework.
A more detailed description of the progress chart will be provided in next week’s newsletter.
Wainui School Communication Survey – We have also included a short survey for you to fill in to help us plan for the future. This will also be emailed to every family group. Would you kindly fill this in by Friday 2nd July. See attached link Wainui School Communication Survey 2021

Ag Day 2021 – Friday 22nd October – Update # 2
I know it seems early to think about Ag Day, but from a raring an animal perspective, July 1st is only 2 weeks away!!! To enter an animal, the lamb, calf or kid goat must be born between 1st July and 15th September. The school holidays provide an excellent opportunity for the children to bond with their animals – spending time feeding, loving and caring for their new friend!!!
We are ordering the day old chicks again too (Brown Shavers) from Northern Hyline. Orders to: [email protected]. Chicks are $10.00 each. Chicks need to be ordered by Friday 9th July. The chicks will be delivered to school after their August 18th hatch date.

Harbour Montessori College – We are a small school with a big mission to help young people find their own unique pathway through the teenage years. We appeal to adolescents who might find the thought of a large school daunting and to those young entrepreneurs out there who value independent learning opportunities. We’d love the opportunity to talk to any parents at your school who are thinking about where their children will go once they finish up with Wainui School.
