Kia ora koutou from Rotorua!!

This week’s newsletter will be much shorter this week as I am privileged to join over 700 principals from across the country at the annual New Zealand Principals Conference. The theme is Power, Passion, and Pace!! Time to reflect, to gather information, network and exchange ideas after two years of not being able to with COVID-19 is invaluable. We have heard from the Associate Minister of Education on where the key focus of the government is and some of you may have seen this on breakfast TV with John Campbell the need for more Learning Support, particularly in severe and challenging behaviours, but the answers are complex. Today we look forward to hearing keynote speaker Sir Ian Taylor, “Passion”.

After a great start last week in all classes, you should now have received your team newsletter. This contains details of all programmes and organisation for the term.  This week we focus on the value of Respect/ Whakaute, and finish the week with a full school assembly and all the children looking forward to the “DISCO”.

NEXT WEEK is all about “learning conversations”.  Please book a time to discuss in more detail the mid-year report, the next steps and ensure you, your child and the teacher all know where you are going. Term 3 is very much the “learning term”

OTHER

Congratulations – Milly Dixon of The Dance Floor on passing her BTDA Grade 1 Lyrical Exam with Distinction.  Milly was awarded a Platinum Award from the BTDA for achieving 93%.  Awesome work Milly

Wainui School Disco – This Friday, the 6th of August – Juniors (Yr 1-4) 5.00 – 6.30pm, Seniors (Yr 5-8) 7.00 – 9.00pm – The annual Wainui School Disco will be back! With the Olympic Games finishing on Sunday, 8th of August, what better way to celebrate the values of the Olympics – Excellence, Respect, Friendship – and the meeting of athletes from around the world than with our own excellent meeting of friends dressed as their favourite athletes. Just like the Olympics have their five rings, we have our 5R’s, which will be on full display. Tickets on sale in the office for $10 each.

Chocolate Fundraiser – This year it’s a little different – Whittaker’s are doing their Chocolate SLABS – with 5 awesomely delicious flavours!  All families will receive their box of Whittaker’s chocolate slabs for our fundraiser, on Friday 13th August.  The eldest or only child in each family will be given their box at the end of
the day.  There will be a note attached to each box with details of how and what to do. We will have plenty of boxes to sell if you run out.  Fantastic prizes up for grabs!! Watch this space….  Any questions please email FOWs – [email protected]

Quiz Night Carpark Auction – The Marshall’s won the auction for a Carpark at Quiz Night. A sign has been put up indicating this at the carpark which is the one next to the Disabled Carparks along the pool fence.  Well done to the Marshall family – this will come in very handy in the rain!!

Ag Day – Update # 5 – Friday 22nd October – This year we have ordered 45 chicks with their hatch date being August 18th. We’ll let you know the delivery and collection date from school.  If you have not already done so, please contact Mel in the office [email protected] to pay for your chicks.  Chicks are $10.00 each.

Ag Day Animals – I’m sure many of you will have your Ag day animals already but you have until 15th September (this is the last date for them to be born) to get your kid goat, lamb or calf for this year.

Ag Day Animals at School – If you need to bring your pet lamb or kid to school for their lunchtime feed, please contact us at school first. It is vital that this is arranged prior to animals coming to school, so the necessary areas / pens can be organised for them.

The following information is taken from our Ag Day information booklet.

Wainui School Ag Day General Rules:

4. Lambs and goats may be brought to school while needing their lunch time feed (from 1 to 6 weeks of age). From 6 weeks on the lambs / goats need to stay at
home. In line with our Wainui School Health and Safety / Animal Ethics policy: Any animals at school must receive:

● Suitable and adequate food and water
● Shelter
● Appropriate handling
● The opportunity to behave normally
● Protection from injury and disease.

Parents must ensure an adequate enclosure is provided at school. Lambs / goats must not be tethered.  Lambs and goats DO provide a distraction and safety issue on the bus, so please bring them by car.  Hopefully this provides clarification for you all.
