FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora koutou,

The temperature has cooled, hasn’t it!! As I write this I have the fire burning at home and feel very privileged I can keep warm and cosy!! I hope you have stocked up on firewood, lots of soup and indoor games. I was fortunate to spend some of last week in Taupo at the Auckland Principals Conference. It was great to have some time to network with other Principals, hear presentations from the Resilience Institute; a company that works with businesses and business leaders, high profile sports teams as well as now sharing their theory, on theories. A highlight was hearing from the very entertaining Richard Taylor, winner of the 10,000 meters at the 1974 Commonwealth Games training under Arthur Lydiard and how important his family were in support.

THIS WEEK

Cybersafety – Yesterday we had one of New Zealand’s leading cybersafety experts in our school, John Parsons. John works with the New Zealand Police, educationalists and health professionals. I am sure last night you heard many stories from John’s presentation whether you have a 5 year old or 13 year old. John had clear messages and practical strategies for being safe. He message is on empowering children to be in control of themselves, to be powerful and not interact with anything on-line that makes them feel uncomfortable, to “trust their gut feeling”. You, as parents, are very important as all the children have been reminded that, parents help to keep them safe.

Unfortunately we cancelled our own parent night as we only had 4 parents keen to come. BUT we are all invited to hear John Parsons at either the Silverdale School Hall on Wednesday night or at Stanmore Bay School Auditorium on Thursday night, both meetings start at 7.00pm and finish at 8.30pm. The staff at Wainui School all met with John Parsons after school and had a thoroughly engaging meeting discussing the health and safety aspect of cybersafety and the Vulnerable Children’s Act. He had some very relevant stories of processes around the policy and procedures. If you would like any links to some of the You Tube clips he showed or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact either the class teacher or myself.

CampCamp Shakespear Tui Team Camp – This week 76 children, 3 teachers and an army of parents are all heading out to Shakespear Park for camp. We wish them all great weather (according to one parent, Chris Moore, our most experienced camp parent, the weather will be warmer than the beginning of the week and ok for the activities!! Thank you to every parent who is taking time out of their own work place and joining us. We look forward to hearing the camp stories on return.

Cyber Safety Day – On the 22nd of May, John Parsons, a NZ Cyber Security expert came to Wainui School to teach us about cybersafety and cybercrimes. I thought that his lesson was very interesting, educational and had a lot of meaning. I had tears welling in my eyes when John told us the story about his childhood. He told us that he was bullied when he was 13 and was living alone on the streets for about a year. There was a lot of things I didn’t know before, he taught us not to put too much private information about yourself or others on social media, not to post pictures of people on the internet without their permission, how a little act of kindness could save a person’s life. I am very grateful to John since this short lesson had taught me so much and the advice for the things I might have to face in my future.
