Bike-A-Thon – Wow, wow, wow, what a phenomenal amount raised, we are all blown away! Thank you to every grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend, and neighbour for their support. So now the weather is holding us to ransom and it is too risky to try and hold the event today with such a bad forecast of Cyclone Fili, the management team has made the difficult decision to postpone. We look forward to a fun-filled day on Thursday, the food is ordered and ready to go! You are all welcome!
The timetable remains the same – Bikeathon 2022 Timetable
Unfortunately, Harcourt’s coffee and cone van cannot come on Thursday, it is sponsored by Simone du Bernard BUT we will endeavor to get our coffee cart resurrected and going. If anyone is a coffee maker and can spare an hour or so on Thursday, please let us know.
ANZAC Day Service – This is such a privilege as a community to be a part of the Upper Waiwera Service and Celebration at the Weranui Road Cenotaph. On Monday, the 25th of April, an ANZAC Day Commemoration will be held at the Upper Waiwera Cenotaph (705 Weranui Road) beginning at 2:30 pm. This commemoration is open to the public and it would be great to see our school families in attendance. Wainui School has a close association with the service at the Upper Waiwera Cenotaph, having been involved for many years following the closure of Upper Waiwera School in the 1970s. Many families at Wainui School, both past and present, have close connections to the cenotaph. Harry Browne Hale and Sunny Odedra will represent the school.
Our students are providing some artwork to put on display at the afternoon tea At the conclusion of the service, a pipe band will lead the way to Maureen Patterson’s house, 1a McCathie Road, for a shared afternoon tea. If you intend to attend the afternoon tea, it would be fantastic if you could provide a plate. If you have any questions, please direct them to [email protected]
Term 2 Powhiri – Friday 6th May 9:15 am – We plan to begin the term with a Powhiri to welcome new staff members, teachers Mr. Luke Cochrane, Miss Brooke Hunter, and Mr. Nick Wotton. We also wish to welcome all new families that have not been welcomed officially at a Powhiri as has been our tradition in the past. This includes families from, not only this year, but those who haven’t been welcomed in 2021. There will be kai to follow.
Some Celebrations – This term we have had much to celebrate; from producing our first jars of honey and creating a label, with the support of SJA Honey to re-establishing the gardens in the weekly Garden to Table programme. Sue Johnson, since taking over the role of garden specialist has revived the gardens and with the teachers and children of the Tui and Takahe teams invigorated the gardens. They look amazing and are producing food again. You are most welcome to wander down and have a look during the bike-a-thon.
Shout Outs and Thanks – With just two days to go until the end of Term, I wish to thank every parent/ caregiver, grandparent, and support person for helping keep our school community safe, supported, and enabling our tamariki/ children to attend school as much as we can within the rules and the procedures that living with Covid-19 has had. I also wish to thank every member of the staff, the teachers, and the support staff for all their hard work, the relentless positivity, the care and commitment everyone has shown to keep the learning going, developing the hybrid learning, keeping hygiene Red Level procedures in place, but most of all providing such a positive learning environment for our akonga/ learners.
Finally, I wish to thank the Wainui Board and the FOWS team of parents for your endless support at meeting in Red Level and for ensuring Wainui School is a school that is inclusive of the community and continues to make it a better place. Your support and productivity is amazing. The outcome of the first fundraiser is amazing. Special thank you to Tania Ledger-Cummack for organising and driving the Bike-A-Thon Raise It fundraising side, the prizes, and coordinating the food – outstanding!!
FINALLY
Enrolment Zone Consultation – With Milldale being built over the next year and the growth continuing we as a community have a say on whether we put in an enrolment zone around Wainui School. This means children within the Zone get first priority to enrol, then we can fill up the classrooms. Currently, we have the capacity for 350-400 children. Our current roll is 273 and will reach 300 by October with the enrolments we have now. The Board has some jurisdiction but would like feedback from all the community we have, many of you are out of zone enrolments. If there was to be a zone, it would mean you need to apply in a ballot to attend Wainui School.
Please read and complete the consultation here on Wainui School website https://wainui.school.nz/12395-2/
Ka kite ano,
Gillian Bray
