FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
Matariki at Wainui School – Matariki is a special occasion in the New Zealand calendar which marks the start of the Māori New Year. Signified by the Matariki cluster of stars reappearing in our night sky, this is a time to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present, and plan for the year ahead. We began the celebrations with last Fridays assembly. Congratulations to all classes for your waiata and to the junior team for a wonderful performance celebration. Classes will be integrating themes and ideas of Matariki throughout the week, teachers and children will be involved in a rotation of activities, which include mahi ā-ringa (crafts), waiata (songs), rangahau (research), and purakau (stories). On Thursday, our Year 8 house leaders will run a House Day for our tamariki to enjoy. At Wainui School, we have acknowledged Matariki for many years and celebrated it in many different ways. Whatever you are doing over the Matariki weekend, take time for yourself to pause and reset. It might be cold and dark now, but summer is creeping slowly around the corner. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa!

Wainui School Board News – Farewell and thank you to Nadine Phillips immediate past Presiding Member (Board Chair) of the Wainui School Board has stepped down at last Tuesdays meeting. Nadine has in fact been overdue to stand down as all her children have left Wainui School, the last one at the end of 2020. Nadine wanted to finish her 3 year tenure as close as possible to the end of the term. Nikki Browne has stepped in and is now the Presiding Member (Board Chair). Nikki has been on the Board for 2 terms of tenure and currently holds the Community portfolio. We now only have two more Board meetings until a new Board is elected. We will have space for new Board members to step in, please consider this rewarding role, especially if you are wanting to be a part of the strategic direction of our school and are keen to understand the governing role of a Board member. Nikki Browne and I will be available for a ZOOM Board information meeting on Tuesday 28th June at 1:30- 2:00pm and in person on Tuesday 28th June at 5:00pm- 5:30pm. The Year 5-6 basketball teams – Hawks and Warriors are kicking off fundraising to assist in buying new, and updating the old sports uniforms and equipment we have at the school. Unfortunately we don’t have a budget for this and rely on parents/ caregivers. Our school is passionate about a variety of sports and would like to represent the school with some Wainui sports gear. We also have a basketball representative coming along from North Harbour Basketball to share some skills and knowledge, so join us on the courts at lunch time! If you are sports mad or a company and would like to sponsor a team/ or sport please contact the office and we can look at getting your logo/ business name on our gear or advertised in some way. If you are in the clothing/ screen printing business or have access to sports equipment and could help the school, please also contact the office.

Sponsorship – Currently we are updating a new sponsorship document which we will share shortly with everyone. There is opportunity for families to support the school with all types of sponsorship. Thank you to the Huggins family who are keen to work with us in the area of tree trimming, mulch and water with their company A1 Sure Services.
We are also offering a family sponsorship of the matting to go on the Boardwalk. If anyone would like to sponsor this, please let me know. The total cost is $3,700. Every little and big bit helps the schoool.

This year our wonderful Nikki Ellis and Annaliese Hewitt have everything in hand and are asking for us to round up some auction items for people to bid on (excessively) on the night. To enter an animal, the lamb, calf or kid goat must be born between 1st July and 15th September.
We are ordering the day old chicks again too (Brown Shavers). The chicks will be delivered to school after their August hatch date. Orders need to be given to the office before Friday 29th July to [email protected]

Children raising a pet lamb, calf or kid goat to present in various categories is at the heart of Ag Day and ribbons are distributed at the conclusion of judging for each category.
