FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

The shortest day of the year is this week the 21st June!! Mid Winter Solstice. Many of us celebrate this time of the year with special family times and some of us are just pleased from now on it will be lighter in the mornings when we get up!!

WHATS BEEN HAPPENING

Property News

The builders have finished our new decking where the old toilets used to be. This creates a new space for us to use especially in the drier, warmer months. We thank this building company, Smith and Co, as they have (as an added extra), built us some extra steps allowing better access to the toilets by Rata class (Junior Block).

We are investigating upgrading a block of toilets over the next months, resurfacing our hard court area/s and working with the MOE on developing a new block of classrooms. All projects take time, negotiations, lots of paperwork and consents through the Ministry of Education. However they are always about improving the teaching and learning spaces for our children.

THIS WEEK

Hangi, Powhiri and Matariki Celebration Days – Thursday 22nd June and Friday 23rd June.

Our first hangi for a long time thanks to the newly formed partnership we have with Te Aroha Pa!! Rewana Walker has been liaising with Mr Irvine and myself to make this happen. As this is a new venture we are welcoming in a formal powhiri, Rewana Walker, her father Haahi Walker, Jason (hangi expert) and various other members of the pa to our school. Our kapa haka will do this on Thursday 22nd June at 10am. We invite you all to attend especially if you are Maori, as we would like to korero, (talk) after over a cup of tea about our new partnership, the Whiti Ora o Kaipara Development Trust and anything else you as parents wish to bring up as Maori parents. This will be a part of our annual consultation time with you all. Please come along and join us. I am afraid this time we are only cooking enough hangi packs for the year 7 & 8 students and the kapa haka students, plus the adults at school. We would love to cook a hangi for everyone but as this is our first, we are taking it carefully!!

On Friday all students will be participating in the hangi by watching the process, having a shared lunch and making a trifle or dessert to share. There will be a concert of all the practiced waiata on Friday at 12.30pm, which was learnt during Matariki week. Again, you are invited. Details of the shared kai will be sent through your class teacher.

NEXT WEEK

Art Attack!! 4-6th July – Evening Wine and Cheese from 5-7pm Wednesday 5th July – Every three years we have a celebration and focus on ART!! A team of teachers led by Mrs Collins have been putting this together. Students are all creating special pieces of Art to display in the hall. We have Artists in the community displaying their Art and some will be for sale. If anyone else would like to display art and sell their Art (15% commission would be great for the privilege), please let Mrs Collins know.
