FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
Welcome to spring!! Spring means daffodils, warmer temperatures, more rain and lambs!! Many of you have seen the pens and the adorable and always entertaining lambs!! Our children are very responsible and respectful with their lambs, it is just wonderful to watch and experience. It also means Ag Day and the Country Fair is just around the corner!! This newsletter is very much about Ag Day – what happens, what to expect and the most importantly IF we all help, it will be an even better day!!
The FOWS, lead teacher of Ag Day, Mrs. Kylie Allen, myself and all the staff are well into planning and preparation for this very special day!!
Most people will tell you I have a saying, “if you are going to take one day off work a year (by choice!) please have Ag Day off, as this is our day to celebrate all things rural, and Wainui Schools traditional roots!”. Please join us and your child for this day when the school invites everyone from families, to ex pupils, neighbours, locals, grandmas, grandads, the local kindergarten children and their families. It is the biggest “open” day we have.
Some people will ask, “why don’t we have Ag Day and the Country Fair on a Saturday, then even more people will come?”
There is a very simple reason, being a school day, every child will be involved and come! We want every child to be involved, we are student centred in what we do, and let’s face it, some families are just too busy to come on a Saturday.
Did you know other local schools are also looking at holding their Ag Days on a Friday rather than Saturday? Historically, rural schools always held their Ag days on Friday or even Thursday as this was the day farmers came to town!!
We have lots more to tell you about Ag Day, BUT start planning if you haven’t already, start thinking about what you can contribute to the raffles, to the white elephant etc.
Ag Day – Friday 20 October 2023 – Update # 7
Animal Registration: You still have until the 15th of September for your animal to be born! And if you are interested in rearing a calf please see the details re: calf to rear in the newsletter. If you have not registered your animal yet, please do so here 2023 Ag Day Animal registration form
Lifestyle Vet Information: If you would like the information Lisa shared with us on her visit, please click on the link Lifestyle vets: Lamb feeding guidelines and basic husbandry
Pet Egg: If you are not rearing an animal then you will need to start thinking about your pet egg. Donations: Please find below a list of weekly donations that we would like you to make – if you’re able. Your very generous donations will then be used to make raffles, prizes etc for our event. If you don’t have time to make a weekly donation, you’re more than welcome to make a $30 donation to the school and we will do the shopping on your behalf (you can make this donation via Kindo as well). You can either drop your items off on a weekly basis or else all at once – whatever is easiest for you!

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
- Thank you for your support in enabling us all to attend Mrs Wendy Taylor’s celebration of Life! Many of you joined us at the Red Beach Surf Club, Jason and I had the honour and privilege of speaking on behalf of the Wainui School Community. Wendy served our community with love, professionalism, spirit, lots of humour and incredible good will for 25 years! Wendy’s own children attended the school and went on to achieve great success.
THIS WEEK
- Hibiscus Coast InterSchool Cross Country Year 5&6 – Thursday 7th September – We wish our teams of runners a great day, running fast up the hills of Shakespeare Park. Thank you to Mr. Cochrane for all your hard work organising our Wainui Team and also the full day with Gulf Harbour School. Please keep an eye out though, as this day could be postponed with the current weather conditions.
- Tu Maia Festival Friday – Friday 8th September – Whangaparaoa College – Our kapa haka group will be performing with all the Hibiscus Coast schools as a part of this very special festival. This event has been in place for many years now and celebrates Tikanga, kapa haka and the growth of this across and within our schools. Whaea LeeAnne has done an exemplary job of preparing our group to perform, we feel so proud!! The group perform at 11:00 on Friday. I can’t wait to see them perform! They will also perform in the last week of term at our Cultural Diversity Day so you’ll have the chance see them too!!
NEXT WEEK
- Waifactor Finals – Oscar and Eva, our year 8 organisers, are all ready for this and we can’t wait!! They have ensured the contestants all know, they have a special judge joining them and are organising the prizes.
- New Zealand Principals Conference – This year’s conference takes place next week in Queenstown, and I am fortunate to be attending with many of my colleagues and friends from the Hibiscus Coast. It is always motivating & energising to be with principals from around the country hear the “state of the nation”, be a recipient of up-to-date innovations and research plus what’s working well in our country and overseas.
COMING UP
- Cultural Diversity Day – Thursday 21st September – This new tradition is being this year led by year 8 Student Councillor, Jakob Brown. On this day we encourage you to wear something special that symbolises your culture, and bring in an artifact from your heritage to share. We also encourage a shared lunch of special food from your family in each classroom. Each class will have a world map to mark on where the students families originated from. This enables us to celebrate our own heritage with each other, learn from each other and acknowledge we are a very diverse group of people. This is also World Gratitude Day, and here at Wainui School we are grateful for so much and sometimes need to take the time, stop, be still and take a moment to be grateful.
- Music Concert – Thursday 21st September –We are thrilled to be able to incorporate our first music concert this year. Our itinerant teachers, Maria O’Flaherty and Ross Hutchison’s pupils will perform, as well as the kapa haka group. If there are any other groups or individuals that wish to perform on this day please let me know. Music is another arm of cultural diversity that we can all engage, connect with and enjoy.
FINALLY
So proud of this team today! Last dress rehearsal and don’t we look amazing- we are ready and practiced. All the hard mahi of the year is over and now time to share at the annual Tu Maia festival at Whangaparaoa College!! Thank you Whaea LeeAnne for you inspiration, work and talent to get us performance ready!
Ka kite ano,
Gillian Bray
