FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
If you are celebrating Guy Fawkes, please be safe and not only look after your children but your animals as well! Some of you will know I was born in England and grew up in small village outside of London. Mr Bray and I returned there when we were over very recently!! Guy Fawkes was one of my favourite times of the year, it was cold, we always had a bonfire, fireworks, baked potatoes, sparklers and believe it or not, we made a “Guy and burnt it”. Seems very strange and awful now but that was tradition and what everyone did. The village school was not unlike Wainui School, lots of animals, a beautiful view out to the countryside and a mix of old traditions, the modern face of life and a fabulous learning environment to be in!!
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
Group Day – Wow what a success this was!!! Well done to all our students and their families that attended this annual event at the Helensville Showgrounds last Friday. This is an event full of tradition, the number of cups and silverware is amazing!! I have included a photo of the number of cups that have been donated over the years, just amazing.
Big congratulations must go to year 7 student Emily Thompson and her lamb “Luna”. Emily won Supreme Champion of all the lambs, this is a massive accolade and so very hard to win!!! Well done Emily, your hard work and care for your lamb is so evident!!
Very special thanks go to Kylie Allen who is very much a part of organising this day not only for our school but for all the schools in the area from Dairy Flat to Waioneke. Mrs Allen ensured the Wainui flag was flying with our gazebo and everyone well prepared for the competition!! Great work!
THIS WEEK
Board by Election – Nominations Close at noon on Monday 11th November – Please think about standing for the Board, we need 4 candidates who are willing to govern Wainui School through to the next election in September 2025. There is support from the Ministry of Education and New Zealand School Boards Association.
MasterChef Finals Year 3&4 – There are 6 teams in the final of MasterChef 2024 this Friday 8th November. Hamish Fincham and the Student Councillors are hosting the competition. We are all looking forward to seeing how the finalists create their Pikelet dishes.
NEXT WEEK
Takahe Team (Year 7&8) Camp – The team are off for 3 nights to Moirs Camp in Mangawhai. Have a great time students, teachers and parent helpers. Thank you to Mr Wotton for organising the camp, and to every parent who has taken time off of work or out of their day to day life – a huge thank you. There are 20 parents, we are so fortunate that parent help is still strong and we can continue these activities.
Kāhui Ako ki Orewa News – The Kāhui Ako or Community of Learning is made up of 8 schools now: Wainui School, Silverdale School, Dairy Flat School, Orewa Beach School, Orewa Primary School, Orewa College, Nukumea Primary School and Ahutoetoe School. All collaborate and work together to achieve common goals. Cameron Lockie (Principal of Silverdale School) and I have been the co leaders of this group for the last 4 years and have been successful in our interview last week and will continue for another 2 years. The sharing of best practice, resources and building teacher capacity in through our Kahui Ako goals has been the key to our Kahui ako’s success. For our school this means we are part of a wider network, it means some once a week I am off site working in this capacity and the Deputy Principal’s will step up as Acting Principal.
FINALLY
Farewells – This year we will be farewelling Mrs De Cort after 20 plus years at Wainui School. Mrs De Cort is moving north to live full time in Waipu in their house they have built over the last few years, with her husband Neil!! We will so miss Barbara who has been one of those people who has given so much to ensuring Wainui is the best place it can be for learning, feeling happy and helping us all!! Mrs De Cort’s last day will be the last day of 2024!!
Ka kite ano,
Gillian Bray

OTHER
South Kaipara Schools Group Day – Friday 1st November from Kylie Allen. We had 13 participants in our Group Day this year – Emily Thompson, Taylah Hadley, Ollie England, Logan Marshall, Chloe Marshall, Ella Vermeer, Kelsie Ibbett, Wyatt Broadbent, Odin Morton, Jacob Vermeer, Brax Green, Isabelle Hulbert, Harrison Mitchell.
It was amazing to watch our animal handlers pit themselves and their lambs/goat against other schools in the South Kaipara area. Wainui did very well and won many ribbons in various categories – Congratulations to you all!
I must make a very special mention to Emily Thompson for winning Supreme Champion Lamb (out of 76 lambs)! This Supreme Champion lamb is a shining example of what can be achieved with careful husbandry, a calm and patient approach, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Her victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Emily, who has nurtured Luna from birth! Well done Emily and Luna!
