FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Can you believe it, Queens Birthday weekend is coming up!! Nice to enjoy a long weekend with family and friends, recharging the batteries, wrapping up warm and enjoying soup or hot chocolate!!

With June just around the corner and the temperature dropping, we are all starting to experience winter sniffles and associated illnesses. Please remember to let the teacher know early if your child is absent due to sickness and don’t forget to inform the office if it affects the bus lists.

Sponsorship monies – Thank you everyone for collecting up your sponsorship money!! Queen’s Birthday weekend is a good time for rounding up the relatives support. The 15th June is the last day to collect money.

The Prizegiving will be on the 22nd June!! Everyone is making a fantastic effort to raise much-needed funds. This year it is all about raising money to improve our outdoor play areas. Last year one of the areas was shade for the junior area and sandpit, this year it is towards the court surfaces. If we raise enough, we can also look at starting on resurfacing more than just the courts.

Welcome to these new families who have joined Wainui School; Harrison (yr 4) and Charlotte (yr 1) Andrew (returned to Wainui School from Australia,) Leo Sawyer (New Entrant), Teah (yr 6) and Leonie (yr 4) Schweitzer and Nalia Searle-Pauli (New Entrant). We look forward to getting to know you all.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING LAST WEEK

Rhythm Interactive – 150 drums on a wet day!! Couldn’t have been better for our students. We all loved it!! All the children had an amazing time participating in a session of drumming with John Boone. He loves to inspire and develop in children his passion for rhythm and drumming. This was an extra curriculum activity of which we have subsidised but need all children to contribute $5.00. Please do so if you have forgotten to do this prior to the lesson.

Rippa – 8 teams all participated in the first round of the rippa tournament in Silverdale. The year 5&6 teams were all managed by our teacher Miss Goodger. She was assisted by 4 very enthusiastic year 7&8 leaders who coached, lead and motivated the students in years 5&6. They were Sam Robinson, Conner Southwick, Ty Browne Hale, Bojan Paladin and Cameron Goodger. The year 3&4 students were all managed and trained by teacher Miss Taylor and parent Staton Ranby. A special thank you as well to Nikki Ranby for delivering the gazebo to the venue. Everyone had an excellent time and as we discussed and watched through the photos at Monday morning’s assembly, really upheld our school value of being Relational”!!

COMING UP

Life Education – This interactive caravan is once again visiting our school. It comes complete with a classroom, a teacher and a puppet Harold!! This amazing resource is funded by the Life Education Trust and visits schools all over the country. Life Education is a charity that educates and empowers children to make healthy choices so they can live full and healthy lives. Every year they teach over 250,000 children about their body, friendships, their identity, food and nutrition and helpful and harmful substances. Our teams are all exploring different themes, you will have been advised of this by the classroom teacher. The classroom caravan arrives to start the lessons next week. Please ensure you are informed of the theme and have contributed towards the cost.

Term 3 visit by Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan, Japanese students 30th July – 9th August – Last Friday you would have received a booklet of information about hosting a Japanese student. This is something we do annually and have done for the last seven years. Many families over the years have hosted a Japanese student, made new friends, learnt about another culture and had a wonderful experience as a family. All that is needed is a bed/ beds as you can host two students, and a willingness to be a host. Our culture is very different from their experiences which means you do not need to be a tour guide, simply going for a run along the beach, having fish and chips, is a true cultural exchange!! Our year 5-8 students have been learning Japanese and will start again in term 3, what a wonderful opportunity to practice using the language. We will have a time for all those thinking about being a host family and those who are definitely wanting to host a Japanese student, to meet in the next few weeks. Miss Ludwig does a wonderful job of co-ordinating this and will make a meeting time for all families in the next few weeks. Please note you also receive some funding to cover costs of food and being a host family. If you didn’t get a pack please let Mel Ludwig know. If you are going to be a host please let us know.

FINALLY

The FOWS (Friends of Wainui School) now have a sponsorship document which will be available on the website in the next week. Many families or their family businesses have expressed a wish to help the school over the years. The FOWS team, especially Kylie Allen, Nikki Browne, Emma Coupe and Fiona McIntyre, have put together this sponsorship pack to enable businesses or even individuals to contribute to the school in a different way.

With the commitment to artificially turfing the courts to enable our 8 netball teams, 7 hockey teams and all the classes to practice on a better surface. This could be a great opportunity to be a sponsor. If you would like to talk to us about this please let myself or the office know. This is an exciting new option for our school!!

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
