FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
We are so very proud of our kapa haka and all our children who performed at the Matariki celebration last Friday. Our week’s focus on waiata, performance with confidence for Matariki and the visit of the Orewa College kapa haka was an absolute highlight!! Our school kapa haka gave the Orewa College kapa haka a warm powhiri to begin the day. We then all performed in our teams and finished with kai. Thank you to the FOWs members who helped with the delicious morning tea. I have included some photos of the day.
We still need to have a consultation with you as parents re our Maori children, our Maori programmes and what more you as parents would like to see. Mr. Irvine and I will get some information together. The date we have chosen is in the last week of term 2 after the Music Performance morning on Wednesday 4th July.
THIS WEEK
Tui Team are on Camp – It is so quiet at school without this team!! Big thank you to Miss Goodyer for all her hard work in planning the camp, to the teachers in the team, Mrs. Blackburn, Miss Stevenson and Mrs Morris, for attending camp. Without this full participation, we just can’t have camp!! So thank you everyone. Just as big a thank you goes to all the parents volunteering their help, we never have any problems getting enough helpers, a HUGE thank you. We know all the children at camp are so excited to be going, we wish you the best for the weather!!! We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday and hearing all your stories, many of which will be shared at Friday’s assembly.
Bike-a-thon – Wow, wow, wow!! We will be announcing the fundraising total at the assembly on Friday, we are very excited!! If you still have some monies at home please send it in to add to the grand total!! The prizes will be drawn at Friday’s assembly. A BIG thank you to every family who has made an effort. This is the last week to send in your money for the bike-a-thon.
Japanese Students Homestay – Thank you to the families who have offered to host a student in term 3. We would still love some more. This week we need 10 more (preferably for boys). Please come and see Mel if you can help. (we are getting closer). The students from Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan always love coming to us. The students love experiencing our way of life, the simple things, you do not need to become a tour guide. Running on the beach, feeding your animals all are new experiences for them. This is also is a very good fundraiser for the school as not only do you as hosts get a little compensation, but the school gets good compensation for being hosts as well.
Paid Union Meeting all teachers Tuesday 19 June – The meeting was this afternoon. Thank you to those who were able to pick up their children at lunchtime. Camp of course continues in case you were wondering, those teachers did not go to this meeting.
COMING UP
Music Performance Assembly Wednesday 4th July – Our itinerant music tutors, Maria O’Flaherty, Ross Hutchison and Pete Warren will encourage some of their pupils to perform. Our kapa haka will also perform. If your child learns an instrument and wishes to perform we encourage them to do so. Please let me know if they wish to be on the programme.
Munch Box Lunches – These are available every day to order. Please go to www.munchbox.nz. Kate Marsh lives locally in Millwater and delivers these to us daily. This is a trial, we will also from time to time be offering some alternatives when teams want to fundraise.
FINALLY
Winter Sports Teams – Thank you to everyone for the dedication, motivation and miles driving you all do to ensure your children are part of a team!! I would love to share with you a wonderful story of one of our year 3&4 hockey teams: team of Staton Ranby, Nikolai Pelser, Sunny Odedra, Harry Browne Hale, Dieter Bezuidenhout, Tyler Newman.
“The boys played their hearts out for the full 30 minutes, four against five in the first half to have a 4-1 lead at half time, then I think the other coach realised that we were pretty good and we played the second half four against six and finished with a 6-1 win. Five goals for Staton and Nikolai getting his first goal of the season, yay!!
Harry and Dieter playing in defense, did some great goal savers and got that ball forward for Staton and Nikolai.
They play kids twice their age and have an amazing team attitude, every one of them,. Never any moaning, or not to me anyway!!
I just wanted to share this with you, as I left North Harbour Hockey feeling super proud of every one of them.”
This from proud Mum Nikki Ranby!! Thank you Miss Ross, the coach, apparently, you had a few words to motivate!! Well done boys!!
Ka kite ano,
Gillian Bray
