FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Spring is in the air!! We have our own daffodils flowering everywhere and lambs are appearing!! This week there is a lot happening, all well planned and organised of course.

THIS WEEK

Tough Guy and Gal Challenge – A team of year 7&8’s went off to compete and participate in the Tough Guy and Gal Challenge today. Lots of mud will be the order of the day as this is a “mud run”. Have fun everyone.

Hibiscus Coast Interschool Cross Country Year 5&6 – Our team of students will be competing at the annual Interschool Cross Country at Shakespear Park on Thursday 30th August. Mr Irvine is the key organiser of this event but this year he will have Miss Goodyer and Miss Rowlands to assist him. All the best to all the runners competing.

Daffodil Day Friday 31st August Have you seen our daffodils around the school??!!

Daffodil Day New Zealand. The Cancer Society of New Zealand’s Daffodil Day symbolises hope for 1 in 3 New Zealanders affected by cancer. The daffodil is a symbol of the unified battle against cancer.

We ask all children, staff and parents to join us to wear as much yellow as you can. The year 8 House Captains have planned some special activities for the first part of the day. Please bring a gold coin to contribute to our day for a community fundraiser.

LAST WEEK

WINTER SPORTS continued:

Netball: This year we have had eight netball teams (This is a record number!!). The teams range from year 2’s to year 7&8”s!! Last week I went to support and watch four of the teams play on Saturday morning at the Pinehurst School courts. 100’s of children all playing netball – was just fantastic!! Below are some photos of these teams with their coaches who all do an amazing job!! Please take the time to thank your child’s coach. They have organised, motivated and taken trainings all season! Next week we’ll feature further teams and photos.

Wainui Gems Team with coach Wendy Taylor.            Wainui Jets Team with coach Halena Howard.

Wainui Comets team with coach Janet McMaster.             Wainui Rockets team with coach Jackie Cameron.

Ski Team – Yes, we do have representatives who compete in the North Island Primary and Intermediate schools champs!! This is totally organised by parents. Paris Headford, Rita Straka (Yr 8’s) and Maddison Ditchburn (Yr 7), all went to compete in this competition on Mt Ruapehu. Very sadly the mountain was closed and the competition called off. They are hoping to compete in another competition later this term.

WHATS BEEN HAPPENING

Wai Factor – Is up to the semi finals! This has become such a wonderful tradition at Wainui School and is totally run by the students. The variety of acts and the confidence we observe is wonderful to see. Thank you year 8’s Chloe, Caroline, Caleb and Reilly for organising this for everyone. We can’t wait for the finals!!

Learning and Teaching – Thank you to everyone who has come to a Learning Conversation to discuss next steps to support learning. There are just a very few who still need to come.

Assemblies – We have moved the usual two weekly assembly to next week to enable us to fit in Daffodil Day as well. The Tui Team Assembly is now on Friday 7th September. Takahe Assembly is on Friday 14th September and the End of Term Awards Assembly is on Friday 21st September. Look out for Sarah’s café on these mornings as well.

At these assemblies we celebrate the Value of focus for those weeks, e.g. we are currently focusing on Resilience and have just finished Relational. We continue to award certificates for writing as this is a focus of the teachers to improve the teaching and learning of writing.

FINALLY

Quiz Night!! – Have you got a ticket?? The teachers and support staff have a team and are almost set – still organising our outfits but that is all part of the fun. If you haven’t got a team but would like to come along and support the school, just let us know in the office and we can help you get organised. The FOWS team have a great night for us. We have the famous local celebrity “Will Hall” as co-MC for the night. He has been on well-known TV programmes “Nothing Trivial“ and “West Side”. So see you all there!! Not only will you have fun but you will help raise a few more funds for the school!! Your child will benefit!!

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
