FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou katoa,

Matariki – Signifies reflection, hope and our connection to the environment at Wainui School.  It has become a great tradition for us to celebrate this time of the year!! We have a full timetable of events this week so join us for our assembly on Friday 14th June to celebrate together.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

BOT News – Last week we farewelled Drew Gilpin as Chairperson of the Board. We co-opted Tracey Woodcock back on to the BOT for the rest of 2019 to ensure the finances are then handed over to the new BOT. We welcomed in Pete Adlam and Lindsay Ledger as new BOT members. Brent Robinson has taken up the role of Chairperson, Nikki Browne continues in the role of Comunity liaison, Nadine Phillips as Property and Jason Irvine continues as the staff rep. Drew has written a farewell letter to all the community which we will send out later this week, it includes the new Parent Code of Conduct. We are so fortunate to have a fantastic group of people to govern our school.

Playground Improvements –  The senior playground has finally had the drainage improved and a new retaining wall built, a project enabled by the BOT. We have also had 118 cubic meters of cushion fall (bark mulch) delivered!! Now the mulch will not drain away every time there is a storm!! This was all delivered last Thursday.  A huge thank you to Brett Taylor who has added spreading the mulch onto his task of building the retaining wall. As a part of their community service for the William Pike Challenge, our Year 8’s spread the mulch. We aim to have this finished by the end of the week.

Grant Applications – Thank you to parent Annaliese Hewitt for your work in applying for Grants to help pay for the playground mulch. Annaliese had great success applying for three grants and successfully obtained two!! $2500 from Pelous Trust and $500 from Dragon Trust. This all helps us afford to improve our playgrounds for the students!! We are next going to apply for Grants to try and reseal and increase the hard play space up by the classrooms and office. If you have any contacts or ideas for sponsorship in this area please let us know. Thank you, Annaliese, it certainly helps Miss Ludwig and I immensely and enables us to meet our goals so much more quickly!!

THIS WEEK

This week it is all about Matariki then it’s off to the Wild West!!

Matariki Celebration and a real focus on Te Reo, kapa haka, sharing, planting for new beginnings will all occur over the week. Most classes will end the week with a shared kai of some sort. There will also be a house Matariki day on Friday 14th June to end the celebrations. Please ask your child what they are involved with. Everyone is learning a new waiata to perform at a sharing time on Friday. We have introduced a change for the way students greet their teachers – students can address all teachers including, myself as either Whaia (women teacher) or Matua (male teacher) and their first name e.g Matua Jason or Whaea Gillian. This was trialed at Silverdale School last year and proved very successful.

Maori Consultation Evening on Wednesday 12th has been cancelled – We will try for a new time perhaps during the day when people are available as we did not have any RSVP’s at the time of writing this newsletter.

Wild West Quiz Night – Is this Saturday 15th June!! Lots of tickets have been sold so well done to everyone for getting behind our FOWS event!! Please get into the office and get your tickets as soon as possible as these are selling out fast.

Wai Factor Semi-Finals – Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th June – All participants have been contacted and we look forward to fun lunchtimes. I know Celeste and the school Year 8 leaders really enjoy getting this competition organised.

COMING UP

Japanese Students from Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan –  Are visiting once again from Japan in Term 3. Dates are Tuesday 30th July – Friday 9th August 2019.  Miss Ludwig has a pack with all the details in for every family to consider hosting a Japanese student!! If you have never done this before and wish to it is a wonderful opportunity for your family to learn a little more about Japan and their culture. It is also a way of supporting the school as we need 15 students this year hosted by our families. We have been participating in this partnership with Japan for 9 years. We have hosted students and their teachers from Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan for the last 4 years. This school is going to become even more special to our school as we are both keen to sign a Sister School Partnership. These students are all 12 – 14 years, we find this works with our students as they love being with our younger students. You can host one or two students and I know families like to do this every year. I hope we have enough students this year for everyone who wants to host!! Please think about this, you do get reimbursed for all expenses as well.

FINALLY

Kindo – Is going very well, please remember all activity costs are now expected to be online through Kindo. If you have any questions, Miss Ludwig, Mrs De Cort and Mrs Elliott are all in the office to help you.  The school donation is on there as well and as we are a Decile 9 school we will not be getting the government subsidy for this. Please contribute our school donation, you can do this as one lump sum, or in parts. A huge thank you to the families that have contributed this. We are trying to keep all other costs down to a minimum.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
