FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
Haere Mai to week 12 of Term 2. What a term it has been from COVID-19 lockdown Level 4 (we were all at home), to Level 3, to Level 2 to Level 1. Often it is hard to remember back to the beginning of 2020 that amazing summer. 2020 began with Term 1, Week 5 with the ERO (Education Review Office) visiting our school to review and evaluate our programmes, our culture, our education achievement to give parents, whānau, and the wider school community assurance about the quality of education children and young people receive. ERO reports on the equity and excellence of learning outcomes for all students and for specific groups including Māori students, Pacific students, and students with additional learning needs. It also includes a focus on accelerating learning for students. ERO also reports on the quality and effectiveness of the school’s processes and practices for continuing and sustaining improvement. The report gives evaluation findings.
As a BOT and staff we are very pleased with the report our school got and it is now approved and will shortly be on the ERO website. It is a wonderful outcome for the first half of the year, one we can all be proud of.
Here is a direct quote from part of the report. I will attach the full report to our website and the link to ERO’s when it is posted up on theirs.
“Students are supported to be enthusiastic, capable, and confident learners. They enjoy positive relationships with classroom teachers and adults who support their learning. The school has high expectations of their academic achievement and for their social and emotional wellbeing. Explicit school values complement shared expectations of positive behaviour for learning.
The school’s curriculum provides broad and meaningful learning opportunities for students, while ensuring that literacy and mathematics are central to teaching and learning. Students develop inquiry-based learning skills, using relevant and local contexts. An increasing focus on local Māori history, te reo me tikanga Māori is adding connections that enhance children’s sense of place and identity.
Support for teachers has resulted in a collegial culture across the school….
THIS WEEK
Bike A Thon – By the time you read this, it will be all completed!! Thank you, everyone, for your support, your friends, families, workmates and neighbours generosity has blown us away and we are thrilled with the response. We were not sure if we should go ahead, but the support has been tremendous. This means we can go ahead with a basketball hoop and replacing Junior Ipads and Chrome books.
Thank you to Kate Doherty, Mel Mayes, and the team of FOWS for organising the prizes, the food and the coffee. A big thank you for Nikki and Billy Browne Hale for finding and donating the coffee cart. We have the machine and now the cart and we look forward to this having lots of use. Thank you to the sponsors, firstly our Platinum Homes – (Watt family) who have sponsored the main prize – a bike and to New Zealand Composite for becoming a gold sponsor.
A HUGE thank you to Chris Scott our newest Board of Trustees member and Mr Lee along with the Year 8’s, Vinnie Holmes, Lucas Keller, Olllie Steen, Marley Straka, Cole Davies, Gabe Brewin-Brown and Bowen Jonkers McAllister for clearing the fallen tree on the bike track on Monday morning as it would have been very difficult to run the Bike a Thon without your fast work.
We will share lots of photos and the prize winners as soon as we can. Below is a photo of James and Vinnie from 2019!!
It is all Matariki this week as well as biking we are all practising our waiata to share at a performance on Friday morning.
We have planned a week of activities all around the theme of Matariki. Today every class I went into were all engaged in activities that used this theme, from making constellations out of tiny mallow puffs and toothpicks to making a circuit in the Year 7 class that would enable a star constellation to light up. In a Year 3 /4 class a range of strategy games were being played around the theme of Matariki that used maths skills and strategic thinking.
We will be planting some citrus trees donated by APS and Mrs Morris and we will all be having a special morning tea to celebrate as this has become our tradition (to share “Kai”)
Sports Teams – Are practising now in the mornings ready for their competitions that have either just started, or start next term. Thank you to all the coaches and managers that we have seen at the early morning practices.
Learning Conversations – Well done everyone for turning out on those miserable wet evenings – thank you!! The conversations have been so very valuable enabling teachers, the SENCO and myself to begin making decisions for next term in a more focussed way around the needs of your child and the classes. It was a great turnout. If you missed making an appointment please do so by the end of the term if you can. Otherwise early next term. We aim to have 100% attendance!!
NEXT WEEK
Holidays – Time to relax, it has been a long term and everyone is looking forward to a rest!! But before you go please please rescue your lost property. We have a rather large pile hanging on the fence outside the office. It will be given to hospice if not claimed.
New Classrooms – Accent Construction – Will be moving in and setting up the building site and starting the moving of the tech shed and the caretakers shed to make way for the new classrooms to be built. When you all return the area in front of the pool and the courts will all be fenced off and look quite different. We hope this will not affect the drop off and pick up area too much, but as you all know we have become very good at being flexible with this over the last year or so!!
Roofing – The administration and Intermediate classes roof will be replaced. This will complete the roofing that was done in the summer holidays. Let’s hope the weather is good enough for this to happen.
COMING UP
TERM 3 – The Student Councillors have planned lots of activities. Wai factor starts the term and I am sure you will have children practising in the holidays!! Term 3 is also Cross country time, netball, hockey, and Rippa rugby competitions plus lots more!!
FINALLY
Thank you everyone for your patience, your support, help and kind words over the last term, it has been unlike no other term I have ever experienced in my career, one there was no training for. We are so fortunate to have a positive community at Wainui School so take care over the holidays, keep well and stay safe if you are travelling around New Zealand and seeing the country.
Ka kite ano,
Gillian Bray
