FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
So much to celebrate in this newsletter!! I hope you all enjoyed Labour weekend with the truly stunning weather!! It was great for the fishermen, the sports, the gardeners and just relaxing with friends and family over the long weekend.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
Ag Day and Country Fair – What a truly amazing day!!
Thank you community for turning up and supporting our annual day so fully. I know I had suggested taking a day off work which is tricky particularly in this COVID-19 year but so many mums, dads, nanas, grandads, ex-pupils, members of the community came along to support and be part of this wonderful day.
Thank you FOWS for the tremendous organisation in such a short time frame!! led by Nikki Browne, Kylie Allen, and Mel Mayes. You all did an amazing job from BBQ’s to cake stalls, and to set up the rings for the animal judging. The hall was then full of enterprising students with their market stalls, A Bee display, Garden to Table selling their plants and cups of tea to chat about what it is we do at Wainui School in Garden to Table and of course all the “Pet Eggs”!!

Thank you to all the grandparents and ex-staff who came along to judge the classroom arts and crafts, what an amazing job you did as it was so hard. The rooms looked fantastic, the teachers and children had made a huge effort to get this ready.
Thank you to the children and the staff. The classrooms looked amazing. This year I made sure I visited every room the night before whilst judging was on!! Always astounds me the creativity of the new ideas and the traditional ones that all motivate and inspire the children to produce amazing exhibits.
Thank you to every family and of course, the child that reared the lamb, calf, kid goat or chicken, for firstly taking on this challenge as it takes time and can be expensive. The bond with animals is something to be proud of!! It takes time for children to develop a bond to call their lamb or handle their chicken, lead the calf or kid goat. It then takes resilience and patience to be in the ring and be judged so well done everyone. Our raffle winners were: Sarah Becker-Crawford, Nancy Combes, Neil Sidwell, Louise Pengally, Reece McDermid-Venter and Kathryn Todd

The full results will be published in next week’s newsletter. In each category, there were ribbons for various elements, e.g if it is a lamb, wool, meat, rearing, and leading. If your lamb received a ribbon and was in the first 4 you can attend GROUP DAY which is like an interschool event.
Thank you to our sponsors Harcourts Cooper and Co. Simone du Bernard has supported us for many years now and is always so generous. The coffee and cone van give us a percentage of their takings on the day. Judging by the queue for both this year it will be great!! Not only is it through this but Simone sponsors us with donating a $5000 sum to enable us to run events with almost no costs!! This makes a massive difference. As well if she sells a house of a school family she will donate $500 from the proceeds of the sale!! This has just happened so a “cheque” was presented on Ag Day with this amount by her CEO Martin Cooper who then added another $500!! This generosity just added to the day on Friday. If you would like to sponsor the school with your business, please contact myself or the FOWS group for more information.
Lastly this wonderful day of tradition and new was once again a pleasure to be a part of. I felt very privileged that we could hold events again this year after the various lockdowns and COVID-19 levels we have had to navigate. We will let you know the total amount we have made hopefully in next week’s newsletter, but as you would expect all the volunteers and staff had a long weekend break and didn’t have time to count the tickets and monies!!

THIS WEEK
Team Assemblies – Years 1-4 are on Friday 30th October at 9.15 – 9.45. These are shorter assemblies that present value certificates to three children per class – two in the celebrated value and one in any of the 5 values. This time it will be the value of Respect / Whakaute. We will also address items, behaviours, celebrations around things more pertinent to these year levels. There will be no Hellyer Cup as these are only presented at the full school assemblies. Parents are welcome to attend.
COVID-19 Level 1 – Please remember to use the APP at the entrance to the school to sign in. We still encourage you to drop and go in the mornings but feel free to visit classes on a Friday. I will continue to keep you all updated if any thing changes for schools in this area. We will continue to be vigilant with hand sanitizing and keeping tables etc clean.
Master Chef – This is being organised by our Year 8 leaders. The signup sheets have been up for a while, the heats will be planned – Please see attached from Imogen and Serenity. “Hi everyone, this year Serenity and Imogern are running Masterchef, you can be in groups of up to 3 people or by yourself. The Year 1-2’s are going to be making wraps, Year 3-4’s are making club sandwiches, Year 5-6’s are making french toast and Year 7-8’s are making pancakes. The auditions will take place on Tuesday 3rd November to Friday 6th November”.
NEXT WEEK
Group Day – Friday 6th November – Group day is held at the Helensville Showgrounds. It is a busy competitive morning with lots of fun and interesting to see all the winners from the other schools in the region who have Ag Day. Mrs Taylor will help you with registration if you need this. It usually finishes by 1:30pm so if you know you are needed at a whole school assembly you have time to return to school.
Whole School Assembly – Friday 6th November – 2:00 pm – All are welcome. We do understand it is difficult with Group Day as well, but this term we are very short on Fridays that would work as we have teams with EOTC weeks and various other activities. The Hellyer Cups will be presented, the spinning wheel will be in use again!!
FINALLY
Summer feels as if it is here. A number of reminders, please ensure your child has a hat, they are compulsory for any play or sport outside now. The choice of hat is yours as a parent, this is in our Board policy on Sunsmart. Also ensure your child has a full water bottle, we have not turned the fountains back on as we are still in COVID-19 Level 1 and may never turn them back on due to the health issues around a water fountain that someone’s mouth can cover.
Swimming Pool – With the end of the year fast approaching and the new building unfinished, we discussed as a Board when we would open the pool. As we cannot guarantee the pool can be ready for the end of the year as the pool is in the area the builders use, it is more likely it will be ready for the end of January. We will then sell keys if all is functioning as it should. We do apologise for this but we thought best to let the community know early.

sKids Wainui After School Care Service – A safe place for the kids to relax after school, have fun, and play with friends while meeting new ones. COMMUNITY
Next Chapter Parenting – www.nextchapterparenting.co.nz is offering a free parenting course to parents who might be having a struggle in managing their children, or just need some tips and advice. This course does work and has the potential to be very helpful. All it requires is for parents to look, read, watch and hopefully gain out of the process. The course is offered on the website and is set out in video, and in written format. Based on filial therapy principles, it is child centred and most definitely works for those that put in the time.
