FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Term 2 has begun with so many positive stories and celebrations!!

Learning – Classes and expectations – all programmes are well underway, teams and classroom teachers are planned and learning is now in full swing. The teams have a newsletter that contains more detail around the classroom programmes, expectations and dates.  This newsletter contains dates and some information around the learning, the sports and what else is happening.

If you missed your learning conversation last term, please do not hesitate to make a time now, if you need some support from the School SENCO (Mrs Taylor) please make a time to do so. If you wish to access the school councelor for your child, or yourself please contact Tracy Munton – [email protected]  or the school office. Tracy is here every Thursday.

Celebration – Last Friday was a wonderful celebration and the official opening of our new building “Kotahi Whare”. Congratulations to Mrs Richards, Mrs. Miller and Miss Robinson for a wonderful afternoon of the ceremony, waiata, cake, speeches, and the special cutting of the Ribbons!! Hannah Wallace and Jadon Linton were fabulous M.C.s showing just how proud and confident our Year 3/4 students are of their new space. Well done to these two students.  The building took 5 years of planning and working with the Ministry of Education, Architects, Accent Construction, and this was mainly with myself and Nadine Phillips, current Board Chairperson. This project is a Ministry of Education roll growth building and therefore is a project managed by the Ministry of Education. The journey to get this final product saw the driveway remodeled, the bus shelter taken down and the car park removed.  The building containing 3 classrooms and 3 break out rooms designed to meet the learning and teaching needs of now and the future. We all love the end product and know the children and their teachers just love their new place.  As Jake Bennett from Accent Construction said in his speech it was all about “teamwork” producing a building that does make a difference and enhances our school, we feel is a privilege to become the Kaitiakitanga of. If you haven’t had a look, please feel free to come in and do so.

Bike a Thon Prizegiving –  This was held last Friday morning.  Once again we can’t thank you as a community enough for getting in behind this major fundraiser which has turned out to be the most successful in terms of raising funds ever.  Thank you first to Mel Mayes from the FOWS (Friends of Wainui School) group. Winter Sports – These have started.  A huge thank you to everyone who has made this happen.  We have 8 netball teams, 7 hockey teams and 2 Basketball teams –  wow.  It is hard to find everyone a time to practice on our courts, but we always seem to make it work. We love seeing you all practicing each week.  Thank you to Mrs Howard for getting all the teams organised this year and also to Miss Robinson who has helped greatly.  Miss Robinson is a passionate hockey player and has been instrumental in helping Mrs Howard.  Thank you again to both of these teachers. We wish everyone a wonderful season. Please send your results to the office on a Monday for the newsletter to [email protected].

Once again we want to celebrate and bring awareness….  We want to talk to you about the Pink Shirt Day coming up on the 21st  of May,  We want our school to once again participate in this important day and bring awareness about Bullying, what it is and why at Wainui School our values are so important!! There is going to be a day of bake sales and gold coin donations. We want all of Wainui School to dress up in as much pink as you possibly can. We would really like you to support the pink shirt day foundation, so please bring a gold coin donation. All of the money we raise is going towards the Pink Shirt Day Foundation. FINALLY

Road Safety Week – The theme isspeed http://www.roadsafetyweek.org.nz/about-cat/662-our-theme-for-2021-speed. Last week we met National MP Chris Penk, Auckland Transport Engineers, Constable Bryan and members of the BOT and FOWS group. As many of you are aware we are all passionate about reducing the speed outside our school Gate as soon as we can.  Constable Bryan and I would like to extend this further to everybody in our Wainui community to help keep you, and all our students safer.  We have some further interim thoughts about bringing this to the attention of our community, as you may have seen us at the gate. Coming soon will be a RED SLOW on the road.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
