Kia ora koutou,
Hope everyone is feeling well appreciated after Mothers Day last Sunday I know some beautiful cards were made by our juniors!!
Cybersafety – We have a very timely visit by a leading expert John Parsons to the Hibiscus Coast in the area of cyber safety. This has been organised by Gulf Harbour School to bring John Parsons to our area. He is speaking at five schools, Silverdale, Orewa North, Stanmore Bay, Gulf Harbour and Wainui.
In this world of cyberthreats, the explosion of use of such sites as instagram, facebook, tweeting etc. Plus the threat to our systems by virus’s, the increased access of pornography and the ramifications being reported in the New Zealand media. The world has moved a long way on from our last meeting around cybersafety in 2013.
Next Monday we have not only lessons for all children from year 1-8, but we also have an opportunity for a parents meeting on Monday evening from 6.30-7.30pm with John Parsons. Please see separate flyer around this.
If you wish to come but need a child-sitter, let us know as we can have a separate place for children.
Please email the office if you intend on coming, it is really good for us to know approximate numbers so we can determine which room to hold the meeting in.
This may also be a time for us to review our own cybersafety polcies and procedures and understanding of this fast changing world. Thank you to those who have already contributed the $2.00 for this event. If you haven’t yet paid, please do so by the end of the week.
THIS WEEK
Road Safety Week – The year 8’s are currently reviewing the data they collected from our driveway and on the road. Did you spot them with their speed guns around the grounds? They have some very interesting information and recommendations they will be presenting to the BOT.
Camp Year 5&6 Tui team – Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered their help for camp next week, it has become harder and harder for parents to take time off work or out of the usual family routine to enable camp to happen. We literally cannot go without parent help. On Monday night the parents all met with the teachers and myself (for a short while). Mrs Blackburn presented the programme, spoke about the policy and the procedures as of course camp is an area where real health and safety vigilance is required. For everyone’s information, all the safety forms and procedures are pre-approved by the BOT. The camps themselves have their own procedures which we all carefully examine and approve. With this in place the children, teachers and parents then go away for two nights to Shakespear Lodge and have a great time, building such values as resilience, relational skills, team work, and as Mrs Blackburn reminded us all, ensuring camp is once again a “highlight of”, children’s school year. They just love it!!
COMING UP
ICAS Tests (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) – There are a total of 6 tests, next week is the first which is Digital Technologies of which we have 10 students sitting. The following week is Science, we have 14 students sitting. This enables students to participate and have the challenge of an external form of assessment and gain feedback as to how they are doing internationally.
Wai Factor – This has become an institution at Wainui school totally organised and run by the students, led by the year 8 leaders. Children can enter themselves the entries for this close on Friday. There will be auditions at lunchtimes and we will have a final on the 16th June.
FINALLY
I am away in Taupo for the Auckland Primary Principals mini conference for the rest of the week. This is a a smaller conference of about 150 of us.
Ka kite ano,
Gillian Bray
