FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora koutou!
Happy Matariki!
This week we celebrate with Matariki! It was a pleasure to welcome you all today at our Annual Matariki Performance Assembly!
Each team will have performed waiata, haka and the dance they have been learning this year with Whaea LeeAnne. Our performance Kapa Haka Group also performed as well as our Mau Rākau Group. We have all looked forward to the celebrations! Thank you to everyone who joined us for morning kai and then stayed for a short korero on our strategy regarding te reo learning for our Māori tamariki today.
Throughout the week, all classes are participating in a range of literacy (reading and writing) activities using the theme of Matariki, by retelling the legends; as well as tactile activities including weaving, arts and cooking. I have also included some more information for your whanau/family and friends below:
Matariki Officially Runs: 29th to 6th July / Ki te 29 o Hune ki te 6 o Hūrae.
National Public Holiday: 28th June / 28 o Hune (Paraire/Friday Week 9).
Matariki Festival: 15th June to 30th June / 15 ki te 30 o Hune.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
Jumping June – Last Friday, our tamariki showed off their jump rope skills when we held our energetic ‘Jumping June’ skipping challenge. We had music and skipping challenges with everyone joining in – yes even some teachers!
This was loads of fun where our tamariki were able to showcase their new skills and moves, having big proud smiles when they mastered them.
Over the last month students have taken part in regular physical activity learning the skill of skipping, the importance of heart health, and developing healthy habits for life. Thanks to Mrs Howard for her fantastic organisation of this challenge.
Thank you to parents for supporting the sausage sizzle and helping to raise nearly $450 for the NZ Heart Foundation. Special thanks to Leslie Ann Gray and Ben Meikle for their fabulous skills with the BBQ and ensuring we did not go hungry after all of our skipping efforts.
Waifactor Semi Finals – Wow what a competition we have had this year- so much talent, and so many hours of practice! We are so proud of you all! Congratulations to all the semi finalists you were amazing sadly a competition needs to pick winners so these are the students going forward for the finals next week, on Thursday 4th of July – block 3, starting at 12.20pm.
We will have a guest judge to help with the decisions! We wish all of the students who have made it into the finals all the very best!!
They are:
Year 1/2: Tigerlily Allison – Sophia Wright, Isabella Kranenburg and Lily Lyth.
Years 3/4: Elea Johnson – Francesca Ellis – Hunter Stollarz, Mickey Long and Ella Vermeer.

COMING UP
International Students – Students will be visiting our school next term in July. These students are from China and will be joining in on lessons with our students and some independently. Many schools in the Auckland region are hosting International students. It has been a few years since COVID prohibited us from doing this and we are very excited to have them back!!
FINALLY
I was fortunate enough last week to attend the Auckland Primary School Principal’s conference in Taupo. Thank you to Sandy Blackburn and Leanne Stevenson as Deputy Principals for ensuring the school was confidently led. We were fortunate to have a list of excellent speakers including Minister of Education Erica Sandford, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, Lawyer Gretchen Stone and Hamish Brewer, Principal of the year in United States in 2017 the skateboarding kiwi!!!! The messages were all positive, recognising the challenges of today and that we need more teachers in New Zealand. Minister Sandford expanded on the government’s 7 priorities – some of which we are embedding at Wainui School – structured literacy, a focus on attendance and improving learning support. Our new Minister is certainly committed to the cause, her plane was cancelled the night before and rather than just ‘ZOOM’ in she got in a car and arrived by 9:00am to speak to all of us in person!! Very impressive and committed – something we haven’t perhaps seen before by any Minister of Education!
Ka kite ano,
Gillian Bray
