FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Week two and this incredible summer continues!! We feel grateful for not having fires threatening our homes and school as the people of Wakefield and the Tasman area do. This week it is all however about keeping cool and getting to know each other, setting the routines and having some fun!! We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday night. Do come along and meet your child’s teacher/s for 2019, even if you know them or have had a child in their class before, every year is different, each child has a different perspective and loves to introduce you to their teachers.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Leadership Interviews – All the year 8’s have presented their 60-second promo to enable us to select this year’s students leaders. Mr Irvine, Mrs Woodcock (BOT rep) and I were thrilled and entertained by wonderful presentations. The caliber of this year’s leaders continues to impress us. We will present the badges and announce the leaders at our first whole school Assembly next Friday 22nd February.  All the year 7&8’s vote as well. Their vote is 50% at least of the decision.

Swimming and the Pool – Thank you Mr Lee for working so hard to keep the pool clean and at the correct standard for swimming. We have had some unfortunate bad luck with the pool though as the Chlorinator cell needed replacing. It has just been installed as I write this!!

NEXT WEEK

Garden to Table Starts – The Tui Team will be joined by the year 7 class on a Friday. We are so excited about this programme, it was such a successful start with winning the best Emerging Schools and having Al Brown to visit. Despite the extreme dry, we have had some parents watering the garden over summer, huge thank you to Sarah Becker. We have pumpkins, tomatoes, courgettes and chillies all growing strong!! Please do not hesitate to volunteer to help in the garden or kitchen this year, you do not have to have a child in these classes either. If you would like more information contact Miss Stevenson –  [email protected]

ALLiS – Asian Language Learning in Schools begins for the Intermediate classes. This is a part of the Orewa School’s Community of Learning, we are all able to access a Japanese and a Chinese language teacher. Our students will start the first half of the year continuing to learn Japanese with Sensei Hiromi van Beukekom. In the second half of the year they will continue to learn Chinese.

COMING UP

Camp Yr 5/6 – This term Tui team all go to camp at Carey Park in Henderson Valley. Thank you to Miss Goodyer for all the planning you have already done. Even though camp is near the end of the term all the preparation is done now. So if you are thinking of attending with your child this year please ensure you have all the forms and are planning on how you pay as it can be very beneficial to start paying a little each week.

FINALLY

School Donations – At this stage there has been no change in Government legislation as to school donations so we are keeping with the status quo at Wainui School. That is, we welcome every family to contribute their school donation.

School donation is:

1 Child: $200.00 per year or $50.00 per term.

2 Children or more: $375.00 per year or $93.75 per term.

This can be contributed by cash, eftpos or on-line banking, Account Number: 12 3046 0155685 00 (please reference students name and “donation”).

Our school donation enables us to do so much more! If every family contributed it would bring almost bring in enough for another teacher!!

The teachers at Wainui have been exploring and are using a very simple Philosophy. It’s called the “Fish Philosophy” and is based on the Pike Street Fish Market in Seattle. One of the four philosophies is to:

This is essential for quality learning and something we all have to do at times – I know I do!!

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
