WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

  • Working Bee with YSARS and our Community – Thank you to everyone who came and joined us last Sunday!! What a day! The weather was awesome, and we achieved so much!! We were joined by 28 Young Search and Rescue Students from all over Auckland, as well as parents: Carl Bigland, Justin Gray, Jenny Fincham, Hamish and Harlem, and Chris Scott. Together we have finally upgraded our garden for the Garden to Table programme. The 2 new raised gardens are fully built and the greenhouse is very close to being built (that was a 2 day project alone). All of the playgrounds are dug and raked over, the admin area gardens are mulched and trimmed, the water tank area cleaned out, the concrete areas swept and tidied, the lamb pen built, even the sign at the entrance way has been cleaned!!! Big thank you Megan Evans for donating a citrus tree for our new orchard area and the amazing scones! Also, thanks to Annaliese Hewitt for the banana cakes – the food was amazing and kept us all going!!! When it is all completed we will have a garden party to celebrate!! We can’t say enough about the YSAR, they were so respectful, so enthusiastic and worked so hard. What an amazing group of young people!!!

Jeff Thomson was also preparing on Sunday, getting the ground ready for the sculpture crested by a group of year 7 &8’s with Jeff using our creatives fund.

The sculpture is almost there!!!

  • Pukeko Team Kiwi Valley Farm Trip – On Thursday the 25th July, the Pukeko Junior team travelled to Kiwi Valley Farm Park. A great day was had by all. We had horse rides and tractor rides. The students were able to pat animals such as rabbits, rats and guinea pigs. We fed a variety of farm animals such as, llamas, alpacas, cows, sheep and goats.
  • Master Chef – The Student Councillors all had their own Master Chef competition, which was judged by myself and some teachers last Friday. They met the challenge to bake a batch of biscuits, plate them and serve to us in a set time!! Now they know how much pressure it can be!!!

The competition was fierce but every year 8 Student Councillor can cook and present delicious iced biscuits independently!!

  • NOTE: Master Chef Heats – Master Chef for our students will not start until later in the term, when the calendar is a bit clearer. More information will be given as soon as we are finalised.

THIS WEEK

  • ERO – This week we welcome our Review Officer Clare Curtace. If we are a little busier in the office because of the review please accept our apologies, we will get back to you. She will be reviewing our strategic planning, our programmes and our school policy.
  • FOWS Relaunch – This Friday 2nd August at 9am in the staffroom we are relaunching the FOWS as the PTA. All are welcome, come and join us for morning tea and hear all about what’s happening with the new PTA. We are looking for new members! The PTA provides essential resources for the school and organises fun events. Involvement can be as little as attending a social meeting or helping out at events. A relaunch morning tea is being held on August 2nd at 9am in the staffroom. Everyone is welcome to attend and bring their pre-school children. This is a new beginning for Wainui School’s PTA. Please get involved from the start and help us make Wainui School the best it can be. Register your interest here https://forms.gle/M7SV7auxcFpDfKPG9

  • International Students – We now have two students from China with us, John and Lucy. 23 more will arrive next Sunday with their teachers. These students range in age from 8-14 and will be in many of our classes in years 3-8 for two weeks.
  • Powhiri – Will be held on Monday 5th August morning at 9:15am to welcome our guests and all new families who have not been welcomed. This will be followed by morning tea/ kai in the staffroom and hall.

COMING UP

  • Quiz Night – Is on Saturday 10th August, doors open from 6pm and is being organised by parents Melissa Mexted and Cairin Long! The quiz is ready, the live auction and the silent auction are coming together. There is going to be food, a bar and, a great band to finish the evening!! Tickets are still available – groups of 8 can get a table, and if you are either a group of 8 or if less we can easily match you with some others! Tickets can be purchased on the QR Code below, or the old way with cash or eftpos through the office.

FINALLY

The Olympics always inspires us all, the grandeur and splendour of that opening ceremony, the sheer range of sports and prowess of all the athletes. Most of all though it is the story that is behind every athlete, the community of support that is behind them!!! The sheer hard work that has gone into getting to the stage of competition can only be admired and celebrated!! Did you know, 10, 000 hours of practice is the accepted time of getting to your goal? We want each of our children to work hard to reach their goals, whether it is the Olympics, or it is simply getting the basic facts of maths correct or training for the school cross country.

Ka kite ano,

 Gillian Bray

Ag Day – Friday 25 October 2024 Update # 4

Thank you to everyone who has ordered a chick for this year’s Ag Day. We look forward to seeing how well they’ve been cared for when they are presented at Ag Day on 25th October.

Ag Day Chicks Pick-Up – The one-day old chicks will be here for collection next Wednesday 7th August from 2.30pm in the staffroom. Remember to bring a suitable box to take them home in eg: a shoe box with bedding. They will need to be kept warm on your trip home. Click the link for information on how to care for your chick Caring for Ag day chickens

I’m sure many of you will have your Ag Day animals already but you have until 15th September (this is the last date for them to be born) to get your kid goat, lamb or calf! Here is the animal registration form link – thank you to those who have registered their animal already!

Please send me an email if you wish to have help sourcing a lamb [email protected]

Just a note for new families – children may only have ONE pet to care for. A lamb or a calf or kid goat or chick. The students will need to be with their pet when judging takes place on Ag Day. It is also one child, one animal in the ring. If you have two children caring for the animal at home, you will need to make the decision on who is the animal handler for Ag Day sooner rather than later.

Pet Egg – For all children who don’t have an animal to care for, the expectation is that they have a Pet Egg which they create a habitat for. We have had many and varied habitats created over the years and it’s always amazing to see what the children come up with! Start talking at home about what your pet egg may do, who are his friends? Where will it live?

Here is the link to the pet egg sheet to give you an idea of what to ‘egg’spect!

The lamb daycare is up and running! We have a fabulous pen on the field! We decided to buy fencing that can be reused throughout the year, but also be strong and sturdy for our lambs and goats.

Unfortunately it was not budgeted for in our budget and I would love to have a sponsor! Is there anyone in our wonderful community that could sponsor $680 to cover the cost of this pen for us?

Please let myself or Gillian Bray in the office know if you could help us.
Thanking you in advance!
