FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Exactly two weeks of school left until we stack up the chairs and lock the doors!! BUT before we do so we have lots of Christmas fun to have, lots of celebrations to finish the year and finish our final bits of learning!!

Newsletter focus:

  1. Music Assembly
  2. Junior Athletics and End of Year Picnic
  3. Prizegiving
  4. Christmas in the Country
  5. End of Year Organisation
  6. Start of Year 2025

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Phoenix Sweetman-Jones blew us all away with his talent!!

Music Assembly – What a wonderful morning we had listening to all the children who have been learning musical instruments and singing with Maria O’Flaherty and Ross Hutchison!! The morning show was opened by the kapa haka group, very special and a very appropriate way to begin our concert this year.

We then heard groups sing and play, individuals sing and play, we all admired the many hours of practice these students put in to get to the level they are at. Both Maria and Ross have space next year for more students to join their classes.

THIS WEEK

Junior Athletics and End of Year Picnic – By the time you read this this will have happened!! The Pukeko Team will celebrate the end of year with their Athletic Sports followed by a picnic, then treats and special certificates including some farewell ones for those leaving. The forecast is great, I am sure it will be a great day!!

Prizegiving Friday 6th December 1:00pm – Our most formal occasion all year, very special as almost all the cups and trophies have been donated by past families and have special significance. This occasion is for year 5-8 only and celebrates individual achievement and progress. The awards are in all areas of school life; Academic, Sports, the Arts and our values. I am privileged to have a cup to award (although it is always the hardest decision I have to make every year!! ). We have awards for all the classes, plus cups for the environment, Student Councillors and House Leaders. Start time is 1:00pm.

It is never easy to award a certificate or cup but please remember we do not do this lightly and ask that these decisions are respected and celebrated for each child.

NEXT WEEK

Christmas in the Country – Is next Thursday 12th December, start time 5:30pm, venue on the field. Omar is back and dancing with us all, so much fun!! This year we will face the hall as we cannot guarantee the technology will work the other side of the field!! There will be a sausage sizzle, coffee and cone, and all the year 7&8 enterprise stalls where you can buy Christmas presents, handcrafts, and delicious food and sweets!!

Farewell Assembly – Friday 13th December at 2pm. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you are attending and do join us for the afternoon celebration in the staffroom.

COMING UP

End of Year Organisation – We are so so fortunate as we have now filled all our teaching vacancies!! There are schools around the country who cannot get a teacher, we are very privileged, and still have a few applying.

We welcome some new teachers to our staff and we welcome back all our dedicated and committed current staff.

New teachers: Danielle Simpson, Year 4/5 teacher, Jorika Hulme, Year 2 teacher.

Start of Year 2025 – Our first day back at school is 3rd February, 2025, we plan to open to all families by first holding a Learning Conversation!! You will be able to make a time this year. We will set up School Interviews in preparation for this next week. All the information about classes and years will be sent out next week. If you just can’t make it on that day you will be able to book a time with the teacher at another time at the beginning of the year.

FINALLY

Official warm welcome to Ben Meikle who starts as Caretaker this week! He has done a great job with Richard transitioning in over the last months. The pool is up and running and Ben is ensuring we can all swim each day.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray

KiwiRail – Expect Trains on your local railway line. Regular scheduled freight trains have returned to the rail line between Kauri, just north of Whangārei and Auckland.

Our key safety messages are:

  • Always expect trains from at any time, from either direction
  • If you are in a car, always slow down as you’re approaching a level crossing and be prepared to STOP
  • Look out for trains at all times, and obey all signs and signals
  • Stay off railway tracks and only ever cross at an official level crossing
