FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Kia ora Koutou,
It seems so much can happen in a week!! I wanted to assure you as a school I am constantly updated with support, advice and instruction by the Ministry of Education (MOE) over COVID-19. In fact on Monday two full updates were sent via email with instructions and advice on all areas that concern us from attendance, school trips, assembly and possibly preparation if schools do close.
Hygienic Behaviours – We have put in measures to improve a number of areas within school, please help us by providing a drink bottle, to ensure we don’t share the water tap as this seems to happen at the water fountain. We are all ensuring we wash our hands more frequently and properly. I am sure you are doing the same at home. We are also ensuring if we need to cough or sneeze and don’t have a tissue we do this in the crook of our elbow. Lastly as the Prime Minister has said we will all refrain from handshakes, hugging and hongi.
Attendance – If your child needs to stay away from school due to Covid-19 isolation or health concerns, as is the usual practice, please inform us at school.
School Closure – This is under discussion as you will be aware by the government and in the media. In order to close the school our school MUST have permission from The Ministry of Education, we do not make that decison as BOT or myself as Principal.
What you can do now – One of the things the MOE are working on is what will be needed to ensure students are able to continue learning should their school or kura be closed for a period of time due to COVID-19. The MOE are wanting to know now a number of things:
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
Interschool swimming – Year 7 & 8 – This was held on Monday at Kaipara College. This was a great opportunity for those who like to compete in swimming challenges themselves, Well done to Marley and Vinnie for achieving some good places in their events.
Wainui Voices – This has started for 2020. This is a forum whereby our Year 8 student leaders together with representatives from each class meet each week and bring “student voice and agency” to the group. Our aims are to make Wainui a better place and make Wainui school even more fun!! I take this group usually with another teacher / adult and this week it was Mrs Hill. We are reviewing the use and type of rewards and tokens in the school.
THIS WEEK
Bike A Thon – It’s all about the launch of our annual Bike A Thon!! This week we are about to prepare for our annual fundraiser that not only gets us fit but is fun and raises lots of extra funds for our school!! Attached to this newsletter is this week’s update. A huge thank you to Mel Mayes and Kate Doherty for all your work to get this organised so fast!! So here is a challenge – get signed up on the new online platform to sponsor – if you are a business or even as a family consider being a “Gold Sponsor” This is an exciting change for our Bike A Thon!! Whatever happens with the Covid-19 Virus we will continue to plan for this. Newsletter update – Bikeathon – Tuesday 17th March

Signalling the end of the swimming season and summer all parents, family and caregivers are invited to the end of season demonstration and for the older ones races. COMING UP
Learning Conversations – Our partnership around learning is very important!! It is one of the goals in our charter. Coming up in week 9 we ask all parents and / caregivers to come to a conversation around your childs learning map/ vision board. Each year we aim to have 100% attendance and each year we have made this goal because we believe it is so important. You can book a conversation time at the below link. These are going to be held on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st March between 3.00pm and 6:00pm. We have an expectation that every family will make a special time to discuss progress and achievement with their child’s teacher. Please ensure you have made your time. To book your Learning Conversation/s click on https://www.
FINALLY
Thank you to all families who have already contributed their school donation, we have already exceed our total gained at this time last year. Please ensure you have done so by the end of this term, this will enable us to meet the goals we have set and even more in the annual plan.
