FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

To start this week a reminder that this Friday, 4th June we are having a Teachers Only Day alongside all the other schools in the Kahui Ako Orewa. We are all meeting to officially relaunch the Kahui Ako in the afternoon at Orewa College. In the morning the teachers will all meet to continue our professional learning and development in reading, writing, and maths assessment. If you need SKIDS child care for the day please contact SKIDS.

Message from Nadine Phillips, BOT Chair

We are grateful to have such a supportive school community – thank you for your participation and contribution so far this year.  It was fabulous to start Term 2 with the official opening of our new classroom block – a project many years in the making.  Thank you to everyone involved in planning, hosting, and attending the ceremony.

Our amazing Friends of Wainui School team have been hard at work, and we are very grateful for their enormous efforts in raising much-needed funds.  Our budget, like that of most New Zealand schools, relies on a significant fundraising figure.  We would like to publicly thank Leslie Ann Linn and the entire FOWS team for your contribution to the school.  Special mention must also go to Annaliese Hewitt, for applying her expertise in grant applications to the benefit of the school.

The Board had three meetings in Term 1, with our next being 15 June.  Last year our first big focus (together with the Senior Management Team) was preparing for the school’s ERO review, during which key areas were evaluated and reported on.  This year we began by working with the staff on our Strategic Plan 2021-2023.  This gave us the opportunity to review our mission, vision and goals.  The Strategic Plan outlines our focus areas, within which we specify strategic initiatives, actions and measures which are reported against each term.  Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.

The Board is responsible for governance of the school, and one of the important facets of this is regularly reviewing school policies.  We encourage you to provide feedback on the three policies being reviewed this term:  Protected Disclosure, Reporting to Parents, and Visitors. These can be accessed via www.schooldocs.co.nz – search for Wainui School – User Name: wainui – Password: wai123 .  Click on the ‘Current Review’ tab for the policy links and review instructions.

As a school we are reviewing the ways in which we communicate, engage and collaborate with our wider school community.  Please do continue to provide feedback as and when we survey on particular topics.

The emergence of Covid-19 last year changed our lives, and unfortunately brought new stresses to bear.  We are mindful of the ongoing nature of these stresses, and the impact these can have on our school community, including our staff.

We are fortunate to have an experienced stable Senior Management Team who lead a talented staff, committed to providing your children with a safe and engaging learning environment.  The teaching role requires planning, preparation, and review time outside classroom hours – so please be considerate of this when communicating via email.  The same goes for our Principal and support staff, who all hold demanding busy positions.  We encourage arranging face-to-face meetings where possible, as these enable considered discussion within the important home-school partnership.

We look forward to another term of fun learning experiences, and school and community events.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Rippa Rugby Competitions – Last week teams from Years 3 – 6, Miss Robinson and Mr Ng coached and took 5 teams to the competition. Each team had a number of wins and losses, BUT one of the best wins we had as a school was the overall Schools’ Sportsmanship Award. The teachers were so proud of all the players for their efforts and attitude.  Blake Sweeney made it even better with his win and presentation from All Black Great, Troy Flavell.

Well done to all of the teams and players, I am very proud of you all. Thank you to all the parents that helped with transport, managing and coaching.  It is very much appreciated. We have decided as a result of this day we need a gazebo printed with our school logo to take to these sports days. If any business is interested in sponsoring this for us, please let me know as we would be very grateful.

Wainui being photographed as winners of the School Sportsmanship Award – Well done to all!

The New Steps – Have you seen our new steps? These are some of the projects from our special monies from the Ministery of Education to fix problems we have never been able to fix, such as the field drainage and these steps.  It is so much easier and safer to get down to the playground and bottom field. The steps were built by DECNA Construction then Mr Bray fitted them with the non-slip strips.  We are now waiting for the field to establish the new grass to be able to reuse it. Unlike other areas of the country, we have not had that much rain to really get the grass seed growing.  It will take a bit more time to wait and then we will be able to reopen the field.

THIS WEEK

Have you noticed it is so quiet this week – Takahe Team are on camp at Shakespear lodge in Shakespear Park.  Two teachers, one Teacher Aide, 13 parents and 51 students.  Excitement plus!! Camp is where lifelong memories are made, where skills that we don’t develop in the classroom, or even at school too easily are learned.  I had a very happy text from Miss Stevenson last night and she said they are having an amazing time and that the weather has been amazing.  It is not too cold and everyone is having loads of fun. We can’t wait to hear some more stories when they return.

NEXT WEEK

Staff News – Mrs. Blackburn – Will be on medical leave for two weeks having a knee operation. We wish her all the very best for her operation. Miss Goodyer will step into being the Team Leader (a position she held a few years ago). Mrs Uhe will be in the classroom for two weeks. We are so fortunate to be able to cover these positions with excellent staff.

Wai Factor – This will begin with auditions. The Year 8 organisers, Charlotte Robinson and Talia Minton are all planned, and will on their return get the rest organised.  Lots of children have signed up and this year Charlotte is introducing a Golden Buzzer!!  We can’t wait to hear and see all the talent that is out there.

COMING UP

Mid Year Reporting – The teachers have all been working over the last weeks on a change to mid-year and end-of-year reporting. Over the next few weeks, we will explain in the newsletter what this will look like and why we have done this. Mrs Blackburn and Miss Stevenson have been leading this as a part of their leadership.

FINALLY

As we officially move into winter this is a gentle reminder to continue to be vigilant about keeping children home with colds and viruses. Ensuring children have warm jackets/raincoats that are all named please.  The box of lost property is huge now!! Thank you!!

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
