FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Matariki Week!!! The celebrations and observance of this special week have begun at Wainui School.
In Week 9 of Term 2, te kura o Wainui will acknowledge and celebrate Matariki. Matariki began on the 19th of June and runs through to the 11th of July, with the official acknowledgment being on Friday 2nd of July. Below is a link to the Auckland Council Matariki Festival website, which outlines the range of events taking place to celebrate the Māori New Year. https://www.matarikifestival.org.nz/
Classes are all participating in a range of activities planned by the teams that are based around this theme but will integrate all areas of the curriculum.
Thursday 1st of July – The house captains will be running a Matariki house day, starting in the second block and concluding in the third block.
Thursday 1st of July – A group of Year 4’s and Year 8 leaders will be visiting the Flat top Quarry in Haruru Road to see a working Quarry, begin a new partnership with Winstone Aggregates “Flat Top Quarry”, and help with restoring Wainui land by planting trees.
Friday 9th of July – During the final assembly of the term, each team will perform a waiata they have been practicing with Whaea LeeAnne.
WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING
Netball – Year 8 Girls Team – We can’t go past letting you know our Year 8 girls had an amazing day last Sunday at their netball tournament!! The feedback we had about their play, their attitude and commitment was just outstanding. We are all so proud of you all!! Thank you to coaches, Jackie Cameron, Pare Hape and Gabby Minton.
Here is the full story from Pearl Cameron, Captain of the girl’s team: Kia Ora. Ko Pearle Cameron ahau. Recently, our team participated in a tournament at Netball North Harbour. We were part of the Year 8 grading and we were to play 5 games. Originally, our games were to be 40 minutes long but to fit in all the games, they were shortened to 20 minutes. In between each game, we had a 30-minute break so we would sit as a team and discuss all the things we could improve on during the next game. After a lot of hard training and a lot of teamwork, we managed to win all 5 games, which meant we qualified for the finals. We eventually went on and won the finals with a score of 14-9 to us. At the end of our very tiring day, we all gave each other a pat on the back as we congratulated each other for our hard work though. Even though we had no subs, we pushed through and managed to complete an amazing achievement.
Lego Came to Rata class. Last Friday Ollie Smith bought his color-coded boxes of lego to school with his robot to set up our first “lego block”. What a fantastic time for the Year 2 students; they were led through challenges by Ollie to build their own robots with a number of Year 8 leaders to support them. Congratulations Ollie this could become very regular at our school.
THIS WEEK
Quiz Night – Is almost here. Thank you to Annaliese Hewitt and Nikki Mallon for your amazing organisation, it is awesome, from the food, the cocktail bar to the amazing array of auction items. Top work FOWS – please support this evening, there are still a few tables left.
Music Performance Assembly – Wednesday 30th June at 9:15 am – All students learning with Maria O’Flaherty and Ross Hutchison are invited to share their talents and learning with us on Wednesday morning. Some children are not ready to, it is not a must, but an opportunity. If anyone else is learning a musical instrument and wishes to participate, please do so. There will be a morning tea to follow for all parents and visitors that wish to join us.
PUMS – All teachers who are members of NZEI Te Riu Roa will be attending a paid union meeting on Thursday 1st July with some attending in the morning and others in the afternoon. The purpose of these meetings is for teachers to discuss the priorities for the renegotiation of their collective agreement in 2022. Issues being discussed, such as school staffing levels, directly impact on the education of your children. These meetings are a critical component of the negotiation process and it is the legal right of all members to attend a meeting and have their say. While there will be some impact on the usual school program that day, we have adjusted the program to minimise disruption, and the school will remain open. We have our House Matariki day planned for this day as one of the adjustments.
Life Education Van returns to Wainui School – Thursday 1st July – They will remain here through the holidays until Thursday of the first week back. This will ensure with our busy end of term every class gets two lessons. The themes vary from team to team but are very much concerned with healthy life choices. Our Board of Trustees are committed to hosting this activity and has done so over the years, only missing last year because of COVID-19.
