This week we introduce the value of Resilience/ Manawanuitanga, this will focus on the concepts of keeping on, building capacity, never giving up, growing strength. What great concepts not only for learning but play at school, in your sports team and everywhere we are.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Pink Shirt Day – What a great event our student councillors Lyla-Rose Muaiava, Madi Gooding and Eva Pengelly organised for us!
Despite the frivolity and fun the day has a serious message of which we are all very keen to uphold. To stand up and speak up against bullying. I do believe we work very hard to ensure we are kind to each other care and bullying is not prevalent at Wainui School. But we are not perfect, we do make mistakes and sometimes there are incidents that we are not proud of. We also have a saying though MUCK up, OWN Up and Put it right!!
We had a wonderful start to Friday at a Special Assembly to talk about these messages, we were thrilled to Constables Bryan, John, Amber and Georgia join us. Constable Amber is a past pupil of Wainui School, we loved this and Madi & Charlotte’s Aunt!! We raised over $200. and will spend this on something that students can use for their own wellbeing. The student leaders will have a chat and do some research to make a good decision.

Japanese Student Homestays – Last week we sent home a pack to every family at Wainui School with all the information needed to host a student/s from Hatsushiba Ritsumeikan Junior High School. Thank you to Miss Ludwig for getting all the information prepared, we are excited to have these students and teachers return after 3 years from the 1st – 11th August. We also understand it can be tricky making room but please be assured you do not have to be a tour guide as coming to New Zealand and to Wainui School is such a different experience. The beach, the farms and lifestyle blocks, the animals, even to have grass on the field is different. Thank you so much to families who have already indicated they will host one or two students.
This is a fundraiser for our school, a cultural exchange, a time many families in the past have made lifelong friends. As a family hosting you are also assured of some payment to host as well. Please let us know if you can host, we really do need more host families. Thank you.
Bunnings Buddy Bench – The year 8 students with staff from Bunnings constructed and painted a new Buddy Bench for our school. This was presented at the Pink Shirt Day Assembly and now sits proudly on the top courtyard. Thank you to Bunnings that generously donated all the materials, paints and the staff to help us.

THIS WEEK
- MasterChef – Student leader Harry Browne Hale has been swamped with entries, over half the school so we are now re thinking the old organisation and how we will run the competition. He therefore needs a little bit more time. As soon as we are sorted we will inform you all.
- Emergency and Visitor Sign In Procedures – As all schools, we are continuously reviewing and revising our Health and Safety procedures. Please be assured we have revised our Severe Weather Emergency procedures after the events of the last few weeks. We regularly practice evacuation drills, storm procedures, lockdown drills and earthquake drills. These are shared and reviewed as we do so by the Wainui Board.
Visitor sign in procedures – Please ensure if you are in school during school working hours 9:00- 3:00 pm, helping out in the classroom or organising an activity or event, that you have signed in at the office. If you are picking up your child early you must always visit the office to sign the child out. Thank you as this keeps our processes tight and in the case of any emergency we can account for everyone.
NEXT WEEK
- Teacher Only Day (TOD) – Is still going ahead as planned for the Kahui Ako Ki Orewa (the 8 schools who are a part of the Community of Learning). This is on Friday 2nd June. We are very fortunate to have Hamish Brewer as a keynote speaker. He is the author of “The Relentless Principal), a real success story of a New Zealander who went to the United States and turned schools around.
FINALLY
Thank you to everyone for contributing your school donation, ensuring you have paid your sports fees and for The Resilience Project books. This makes such a difference to the operation of the school. If you haven’t please use KINDO, pay at the school office or use internet banking.
Currently all teachers and principals strike action has been called off due to the union NZEI and the government in the weekend suddenly made the decision to go into negotiation and talk. As soon as we know the outcome we will inform you all.

Yr 5/6 Rippa Team
Rippa Rugby Zone Day – Last Thursday the Year 3-6 students represented Wainui in the HBC Schools Rippa Rugby Tournament. We had six teams competing in the competition, with some teams playing Rippa for the first time. It was awesome to see their teamwork and ball skills develop throughout the day. A big thank you to our parent helpers for your support in coaching our teams this year. We look forward to the next tournament and encourage all Wainui students to get involved with these extracurricular opportunities.
