FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

We have started the week with sun and lots of fun activities to supplement our core learning – what more could we ask for!! Yesterday we had a Rippa Rugby “Have a Go Day” with North Harbour sport representatives. We also have the semi-finals of MasterChef in the breaks just as an example!

Newsletter focus:

  • MasterChef
  • Japanese Students
  • Football Zone Day
  • Rippa Rugby
  • FOWS Events and Support
  • Quiz Night Saturday 19th August
  • Chocolates Fundraising
  • Ag Day

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Semi-finals saw Yr 0-2 cooking scrambled eggs.

MasterChef – All heats have taken place and yesterday was the first round of the semi finals!! We are thrilled with the enthusiasm, enjoyment and excitement of all of the participants!! Harry Browne Hale has had a lot of fun (and a bit of angst) organising such a big competition, but it has gone incredibly well with such amazing organisation!! Well done to all the families and participants for your preparation, it has been outstanding!!

All semi-finals will be completed this week, then the final will be held after the holidays, giving everyone a break and time to prepare. The final will be on Friday afternoon, 28th July. The finalists will be able to cook whatever they wish in 45 mins, BUT judges will want to see skill level in line with the child’s age. More information will be in a letter that the finalists will receive by the end of this week.

Japanese Students – Home stay placements are still required for a further 12 students. Thank you to all the families who have already have said they will host. Please join us for a meeting for all host families and intending or interested host families on Wednesday, 28th June in the staff room at 3:15pm. Here, you will be able to ask all of the questions you have, and a staff member from the tour company will be here to share more information and to give a brief overview of what home stay entails.

Football Zone Day – A fun day was had by all at the Football Zone Day last Thursday in years 5&6. Thank you to all coaches and Mr Cochrane for getting us all there, participating, winning, drawing and suffering a few losses – all part of the day!!

Rippa Rugby – On Monday, we were fortunate to have North Harbour Rugby leading a Rippa Rugby activation day. It was fantastic to see the whole of Wainui School out participating in Rippa, with some students trying the sport for the first time.

COMING UP

FOWS Events and Support – A lovely and full meeting was held last Wednesday, ensuring the dates for our next events have been reviewed and changed if needed. All of these dates will be on the school events calendar and are all in the planning process!! We need more parents to volunteer to help with our community events. Please think about donating a little bit of time to help us with these events and make them even better!! Please contact fows@wainui.school.nz

Quiz Night Saturday 19th August – Book in the babysitter and come out for a fun evening with friends! Register your team OR if you’re a new comer we can put you together with a team. Just let us know at the office. Ticket pricing TBC. The theme is 80’s and there will be lots of prizes!!

Chocolates Fundraising – Will be sold from 24th July – more details to come!

Ag Day and Country Fair – Friday 20th October 2023 – This is the Friday before Labour weekend. Mrs Allen is one of the leads for this event and has the first news for everyone below!! We have traditionally always held this event on a Friday, as this was the day farmers went to market BUT for us it means every child can attend because it is a school day. We therefore ask you to plan ahead to have all or part of this day off from work so you can join in as this is very much a whanau day.

Here is information on Ag Day from Kylie Allen:

Update #1 – This year, Wainui School will celebrate its annual tradition of Ag Day on Friday 20th October 2023. This day has become the biggest day for our families – parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, and past pupils are all welcomed to this important community event!

Ag Day Chicks – We are once again going to be selling one day old chicks for Ag Day for $10 per chick. Please either email the office on exo@wainui.school.nz or go to Kindo to order. To enter an animal, the lamb, calf or kid goat must be born between 1st July and 15th September.

Children raising a pet lamb, calf or kid goat to present in various categories is at the heart of Ag Day and ribbons are distributed at the conclusion of judging for each category. Please go to our school website for more information or email Kylie Allen on kallen@wainui.school.nz for any questions you may have.

Children with their animals who receive 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th place ribbons are eligible to represent Wainui School at the South Kaipara Schools Group Day, which is held at Helensville Showgrounds. Group Day this year is Friday 3rd November 2023. We desperately need a parent to pick up the role of parent representative on the group day committee – there is no expertise needed, just a few hours spare to represent our school.

NEXT WEEK

End of Term 2 – Ag Day Chicks orders close on Friday 30th June.

FINALLY

This week I have the opportunity of attending the Auckland Primary Principals Association Conference in Taupo from Wednesday. It is always a privilege to get together with friends and colleagues and listen to interesting speakers and share the day-to-day ‘nuts and bolts’ of the job – often with some humour!! Jason Irvine will be Acting Principal while I am away at the Conference. We are very fortunate at Wainui School to have such a strong leadership team.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray

COMMUNITY

The Splash Holiday programme is a fun and safe opportunity for children aged 8-15 to improve their water safety competence and knowledge, while enhancing their swimming ability. Places are limited to 25 per day and cost $30 per child.

Splash is now in its 10th year, and our experienced instructors provide a friendly and inclusive environment where confidence is built, and kids are encouraged to give new aquatic activities a go!

Activities include lifejacket safety, snorkelling, bystander rescue, beach safety with safer boating and Manu safety (bombing) on offer for the older age group sessions.

Further information and registration is available on our website. Parents will need to enrol their children in the correct session based on age group (8-10, 11-15) and select the location and date that suits. www.dpanz.org.nz/community/
