Kia ora Koutou,

The last week of term 2, it is hard to believe how fast this has come around particularly as we have had so many challenges to deal with including floods and storms!! This week teams are finishing off units of work, we will be having a good sort out and clean up of our spaces ensuring all is in order for the holidays. We have had so many good things to celebrate with as well; MasterChef, the Garden to Table programme up and running, fabulous inquiry programmes in each tea. There’s been lots of fantastic learning throughout our school starting in the juniors with the new BSLA literacy programme and moving through to the CODE that is being taught at all levels from year 3-8.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

• • Staffing News – This week we will farewell Mrs Blackburn for the rest of 2023. Whilst this is sad for Nikau class and our school it is a wonderful opportunity for Sandy who is taking up the position as Acting Principal at Tairua Primary School. Mrs Blackburn has developed leadership skills at Wainui over the years in her role as Assistant Principal and as a Kahui Ako Leader, we are proud of Mrs Blackburn moving into this position and wish her all the very best.
  • Miss Leanne Stevenson will move into the Acting Assistant Principal role and Mr Luke Cochrane will move into the role of team leader for the Tui/ Takahe team. Mr Irvine and Mrs Uhe will be the teachers for Nikau class. We are very fortunate to have enough teachers to be able to easily fill the roles.

• • MasterChef – The heats and semi-finals have been truly amazing!! I can’t thank every family enough for the wonderful support and enthusiasm the competition this year has generated!! So many of the school participated!! A huge thank you to Student Councillor Harry Browne Hale for all his organisation together with Oscar Price and Jakob Brown, your help and support was amazing!! It was so hard to narrow the competition down to the finalists. Congratulations to everyone who took part, you were all winners!! The MasterChef final is scheduled for Friday 28th July, start time 1:50pm. All finalists have received a special letter with the criteria stated. Each finalist will have 45 minutes to create their own dish!! We can’t wait to see what students come up with!!

• • Sports News – Congratulations to all our winter sports teams that have been practicing whether it is raining, windy, or sunny and calm!! You have all made a great start to the season, next term we wish to invite all the coaches and managers to a very special morning tea on Wednesday 26th July.

• • Congratulations – Logan Marshall, Kobe and Elle Olivier have been doing Jiu Jitsu for the past 5 terms, each term they have passed their grading and received a stripe on their belt for their achievements. Last week they received their new grey and white belt.

• • Special Sports News –  A Wainui School Sports Star on the Rise – During the upcoming school holidays, 6-year-old Danté Broederlow will be living the dream. He has qualified to play at the 2023 IMG Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego this July. Danté will be representing New Zealand in the Boys 6 & under category and is travelling with a team of around ten other top Kiwi junior golfers competing in their respective age groups ranging from 6 & under to 15-18 years. Danté is very excited about visiting America and playing in the tournament. He will attend the tournament opening ceremony, where the children participate in a parade with their national flag. They also do a pin exchange and Danté is taking around 50 NZ Flag Pin Badges to exchange with the local and international kids. Apparently, the NZ Flag pin is sort after by the other kids as it’s a rare and thus popular one. Not to miss an opportunity, Danté is also excited to visit Legoland California, which is conveniently on the way to San Diego. Wainui School wishes Danté and his family all the very best on their adventure and looks forward to hearing all about it on their return. Ngā mea pai katoa – all the very best!
  • We will wish him well and show him support before his trip, and recognise his accomplishment of being on the world stage representing New Zealand at our school Assembly on Friday.

J5 Black Mambas Rugby Team – “On a cold and wet Wainui morning another little Rugby team played…in Northcote… and their mamas watched” – (please use Elvis’s voice to reread the first line). The mighty Black Mambas J5 rugby team, made up of year 2, 3, 4 and 5 Wainui School boys did wonderfully well at the annual Ron Williams tournament at Northcote on Sunday. They won their first 3 games, and their pool, lost narrowly in the Cup Semi-final, and dusted themselves off to win the 3rd/4th play-off. 5 games in a day is a lot for these kids,  and they kept trying to the end. Very proud of the effort and resolve.

THIS WEEK

• Japanese Students – Are visiting us from 1st of August to 11th August, thank you to those that have offered to host a student or two. We still do need a few more if you able to. There is a parent meeting tomorrow in the staff meeting at 3:15pm to hear all about hosting from one of the ladies at World Class Group Travel Ltd, the company our school has dealt with over many years.

• School Assembly – Is this Friday 30th June, we will celebrate the value of Resilience and Reflection. We will share and celebrate the learning and performance of the Tui and Takahe teams.

• Term 3 Events – We start the term with Matariki. During Term 2, e tamariki ma (children) of Te Kura o Wainui (Wainui School) have worked with Whaea LeeAnne engaging in activities based on Matariki such as raranga (weaving), whakaraka (games), and waiata (songs). During the first week of Term 3, Te Kura o Wainui will be acknowledging Matariki, which will reappear in the night sky between the 10th and 13th of July. The official public holiday for Matariki is Friday, the 14th of July. For those not familiar with Matariki, it is the beginning of the Māori New Year. It is a time of renewal and celebration in Aotearoa New Zealand that begins with the rising of the Matariki star cluster (the Pleiades or Seven Sisters). Matariki is a time to gather with family and friends to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. • Mid-Year Reports – Are going home at the end of the first week of term 3. These will be followed by Learning Conversations in week 3 the 2nd and 3rd of August here you can meet and discuss the Mid-Year Report.

• Ag Day – It’s all go for this year’s Ag Day on the 20th October, animals (lambs, calves, kid goats) can be raised from 1st July. Thank you to Melissa Soulsby and Tanya Cummack-Ledger for being our parent Ambassadors for Group Day. Wainui is so lucky to have parents to help and represent us. Lots more will be shared next term for Ag Day and Country Fair. Over the holidays if you are seeing grandparents/ a special friend that would like to be a judge in the classroom please send their name to me and an email contact. Judging the exhibits in the classrooms is always in the afternoon (after school) the day before.

OTHER

The Family Whittaker’s Chocolate Fundraiser is on again. This fundraiser was a great success in 2021 raising over $7,000 towards our annual FOWS fundraising efforts. We will be running this again this year, and a box will be handed to every family in the school. (Eldest child will get the box to bring home). There are some great prizes and incentives for the kids to get involved, and a major spot prize up for grabs! The chocolate is all delivered in boxes to each family/eldest child on Friday 21st of July 2023 for each family to sell. Kindo will be available to pay for the sold boxes.

School Photos – Reminder that the last day to order your school photos is Sunday 16th July which is the last Sunday of the school holidays.

The Wainui Basketball Teams would like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped them fundraise at last Friday’s sausage sizzle! All funds go towards balls, singlets and trophies. We have a record number of teams this year! The Teams would also like to say another big THANK YOU to Kane Kadlec and VABS Ltd. for their awesome donation, this was so the teams could have training/gear bags with all the needed and well used essentials. Good luck to all the teams this week as they head into their final games for the term. A well deserved break for all players (and parents) over the school holidays before starting another competition round in term 3. Well done and good luck Seniors, Hawks, Thunder, Warriors, Stingers and Jets!
