FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

The sun is shining on us all and it has felt as if we have returned to our routine in full!! I am almost reluctant to say to much to jeopardise this!! But it feels great!!  Learning is going full on now our new programmes have started; both the structured literacy – Better Start Literacy in the junior area and throughout the school the Resilience Programme. Our school counsellor has also returned. It is really great to be able to talk about your child the learner and what is happening at school.

Newsletter focus this week:

  • Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA)
  • The Resilience Project
  • Kirsty Clark, School Counsellor
  • Year 7&8  Inter-School Swimming Competition at Kaipara College
  • Payment for Goat Island and Surf Trip Years 5-8
  • Whole School Assembly Pukeko Team
  • Registration for Winter Sports Continues – online form
  • Junior Swimming Carnival and Book Sale

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

  • Better Start Literacy – This has begun in all junior classes (Yr1 & 2). The teachers have worked super hard to get this up and running, they are studying the programme through Canterbury University alongside implementing the structured literacy approach. This week you will as a family have a home learning book with some follow up activities in. If you are unsure please contact the teachers, they are only too happy to share with you what to do.
  • The Resilience Project – This is also in full swing, very exciting, very inspiring and comes with a very special home and school booklet. This does need paying for by you as a family but school is supplementing the cost of these so the contribution we are asking for is $10.
The Resilience Project Parent Evening – Wednesday, 22nd of March @ 6 pm – Wainui School and The Resilience Project would like to invite parents to a parent information evening on Wednesday, the 22nd of March @ 6 pm. The presentation will run for approximately one hour and be facilitated by Kathy and Georgie from The Resilience Project. We understand that as primary carers, you have an essential role to play in building positive mental health with your children. Through this programme, teachers and students will engage in weekly lessons and activities around the key principles of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) to build resilience. To support what we’re doing in the classroom, you will be given access to an online Parent and Carer Hub which will introduce you to The Resilience Project, build your own confidence around resilience, and give you ideas to help your children and their mental health throughout the year. We look forward to seeing you there!
  • Kirsty Clark

Kirsty Clark, School Counsellor – Is here on Thursdays to meet up with any student who would like to access support. Please let Jason Irvine (SENCO) Special Education Needs Coordinator know. Everything is very confidential. All the students last year so enjoyed being with Kirsty, she has been such an asset to us at Wainui.

“A bit about me… I live in Warkworth with my husband and two girls Aurelia 12 years and Faye 8 years. I moved to NZ 20 years ago from England and haven’t looked back. My husband is South African and he and his family have been in NZ 21 years. We also have a dog, cat and four chickens!! They all get on well with each other which is a pretty unusual sight!
I am really creative, love my arts, painting, drawing, crafting, baking, reading. Walking in nature either in the bush or by the ocean! I have a love for life and seeing people smile! I absolutely love my work with children and try to bring as much fun and creativity as I can to each session and work with each child’s individual need! I trained with Tracy at BTI so we journeyed together and supported one another through the ups and downs that our Counselling journey brings. It’s an honour to continue on the amazing work she has done with you all at Wainui School.
I am hearing impaired so if you find I don’t respond or seemed to have missed something it’ll be that I haven’t heard you not that I’m ignoring or being rude! I am open and approachable so please if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask me. Kirsty Clark
  • Year 7&8 Swimming InterSchool Competition at Kaipara – A keen team competed at this event at Kaipara College yesterday. Mr Cochrane along with a representative from Waitoki School were the organisers, a great day with great weather and some great results were had by Wainui!! Well done everyone. Special congratulations to Isabella Lehmann who came 4th in the Year 7 Girls backstroke Final and Harry Browne Hale who came 1st in the Year 8 Boys Butterfly & Freestyle Final!!
