FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Thank you to everyone for the kind messages of support and generosity for Miss Shelley Ross.  We have passed them all on to her and they were very much appreciated.

What Else Has Been Happening!!

Lost Property – It’s growing in the box outside our office – lots of sweatshirts and hoodies! Please come and claim them as the weather gets cooler! This box will be donated to charity next week so if things are missing we might have them.

THIS WEEK

Pink Shirt Day – Maya and Xela, our Year 8 Student Councilors entertained us at last Friday’s assembly sharing the messages of Pink Shirt Day and sharing with us how we will participate as a school once again in this day!!

  • Wear a pink T-shirt and as much pink as you can find
  • Bring a gold coin and a bit extra to buy a cupcake or ice cream to raise awareness (this is a treat for a special day)
  • Join Constable Bryan and his team of Police officers at 9:00 a.m to share the messages!!
  • Participate in the design of your own T-shirt competition

Road Safety Week –  This week is National Road safety week.  Our focus is on low speed outside the school gate, and low speed especially at drop off and pick up.  We are working with AT, the Local Member of  Parliament, and various others to try and move this.

Also, we are this week talking about all aspects of road safety, from road crossing to carparks. We have at school this year reviewed our safety around the carpark and thank you all for adhering to this and being careful in our carparks, at drop off and pick up. It is such a short time frame and we all need to be careful, be aware and ensure all our Tamariki get to cars and buses safely.

Triathlon – Year 7 & 8 – This Friday a group of our Intermediate aged students will join the Kaipara Coast Intermediates to compete in a Triathlon event. It is in and around Parakai School and is a great challenge for these students. Participation is voluntary and we have 17 children competing. Mr. Irvine will be accompanying this group and he assures me he will wear his pink T-shirt, but not his tutu!!!

NEXT WEEK

First Aid Training – This is for all the staff and will happen next Wednesday after school until 8:00 pm. This is a requirement every two years to keep our first aid certificates current and ourselves up to speed for the workplace.

Takahe Team Camp Preparation – Next Monday the parents attending Camp this year have a meeting to go over procedures, policy and prep for camp with Miss. Stevenson and Mr. Irvine. Camp is the following week out at Shakespear Park.

COMING UP

Wai Factor – Yes, the annual totally student led event is taking place this term. This year Student Councilor Charlotte Robinson is leading the event helped closely by Talia Minton and the other Student Councilors. The dates have now been finalised, Charlotte has invited a very special guest for the final and she will tell everyone about it.

The dates are:

Wednesday 9th – Friday 11th June – Wai Factor Auditions

Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th June – Wai Factor Semi Finals

Tuesday 6th July – Wai Factor Finals

The student councilors have lots of exciting ideas, projects and events they are planning and working on, sometimes they take time to put together, sometimes they are a new idea. We encourage student agency/leadership and time to do this. I work with the councilors, Mr Irvine, house leaders, communications team, art team,  Miss Stevenson, librarians and the bee team.  Sometimes we cross over or swap the group if the project deems this. It is lots of fun, we all look forward to Friday, especially as the day drives our leadership passions.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
