FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora Koutou,

Hard to believe it is nearly the end of July!! We are all loving today a reprieve from the wet and dismal weather of last week.  Lots of fun outside with activities and sports happening.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING

Property News – It has been all go since we have been back, with the sheds and the bus shelter being dismantled or moved and the site being prepared for the three new classrooms to be built. Last Friday felt rather sad as the bus shelter began to be taken down.  This has been there for such a long time, but the good news on this front is we have been allowed by the Ministry of Education to keep the pieces to use and rebuild a structure. The BOT have decided to build the much wanted (for at least 10 years) outdoor shelter over the back of the school!! Watch this space as we will be announcing our Working Bee at some stage!!

Three classrooms, a breakout room, two toilets are all included in the new build. We are really looking forward to watching it grow and hope all goes smoothly for the planned finish date of December 4th.

I have included the architect’s drawings in this newsletter and some photos of the changing landscape.  See the attached link – DOC280720

Roofing Work – The administration block, the library (Kahikatea second classroom), the Intermediate Takahe team classes, and Karaka class have all been re-roofed.  Plans are being prepared for another “toilet” to be built over by the school kitchen and to redo the large steps going from this level down to the big playground.

THIS WEEK

Basketball with Sport North Harbour In-Schools Coach Coordinator Kaea Samson – This began today. This is a sponsored initiative so it is at no cost to us by North Harbour basketball.  Every class receives some taster sessions on Monday and Thursday for  4 weeks. The student councillors with this passion for basketball, Regan Lowe and Keelan Bouzaid are going to organise a basketball competition alongside this coaching as well. We look forward to seeing how this will go. We have on order a proper basketball goal using some of the funds raised from the Bike a Thon.  We can’t wait for this to arrive.  In the meanwhile, Mr Irvine has put up a basketball goal to use. Lots of fun and all children participating today.

Wai Factor – Is ready and organised by our Year 8 student leaders, Drew Southwick, Teah Schweizer and Tara Phillips, helped by a few others.

Wai Factor 2020  – In week 2 our traditional Wai Factor will begin. 62 participants will be singing and dancing their way to victory where some prizes are up for grabs including a Smiggle voucher for the Year 1 – 4 winner(s). Event Cinemas gift voucher for the Year 5 – 8 winner(s). For the overall winner, they will receive a $30  prezzy card and the Wai Factor Trophy!! All participants in the Grand Finale will receive a lolly or chocolate. All of us are really excited to see your amazing performances and we may have some crazy outfits on the day. All students are welcome to come and watch this amazing show.  From The Wai Factor Team (Drew, Tara, Teah, and Selina)

Team assemblies for Takahe and Tui Teams – Friday 31st July 9.15am – 9.45am. These assemblies are led by our Year 8 leaders and this year the values certificates being presented for the last two weeks are Respect / Whakaute.   This year we are presenting two certificates for the chosen value of focus and one more certificate for any value the teacher sees fit for the child who has earned it. The children all identified last year they wanted more rewards and a certificate is a prized reward.

Respect Certificate winners from week one are in the photos below:

NEXT WEEK

School Cross Country – We are all training for this every day.  It is a fun day on Friday 7th August for everyone so we will have some food and juices etc for sale.

See attached timetable.  Wainui School Cross Country 2020

Year 8’s – Are beginning their decision and visits to colleges over these weeks at the beginning of the term.  Some have been to open evening’s at Kaipara College, Some will go on Friday to Long Bay’s Open Day.  If any Year 8 parents / caregivers need some support both Mr Irvine and myself are happy to do this. If you are making a choice we cannot do that, but we will certainly help you with information.

FINALLY

SKIDS – Are definitely coming.  The Kiwi team Year 4’s with a few Years 3’s had a wonderful time cooking dinner in the Hapea programme. This showed us what a wonderful, enthusiastic organised team Emma and her SKIDS workers are. The start date looks to be mid / late August.

Thank you – We have been thrilled with how fast and efficient Drop off and Pick up has been!! I was not sure what it would be like with the new project underway.   Could I gently remind you if you are coming up to drop off or pick up, please do just this! If you park and get out of your vehicle to put bags on or get bikes it would be more efficient to park and do so.  This has been pointed out to me by some parents. Thank you everyone, we are really pleased.

Auckland Transport is taking up our case of improving the safety of the road outside the school gate –  we look forward to seeing how and what they come back with.

Ka kite ano,

Gillian Bray
